What's the space between the front of the radiator fan and the back of the radiator?
At the tip of the fan, just below the rad tank - approx. 2 1/4", measured by feel :D Note: Fan has forward sweeping tips, and rad may not be parallel to the fan.

how much space do you have between the rear of the head and firewall?
2 3/8" from the face of the firewall pad, to center of the acorn nut on the left rear corner of the cam cover. Firewall pad is about 1/4"thick.

HTHs... FYI My HZJ73 is a Jan/90 build - first month of production.

I need a couple of measurements in the engine compartment. What's the space between the front of the radiator fan and the back of the radiator? Also, how much space do you have between the rear of the head and firewall? Trying to fit the HD correctly.
Thanks.

When installing my 1HZ into the 73 series,I just bolted the transmission to the crossmember ,bolted the crossmember to the frame and installed the engine where it lay.
If your using the proper frame brackets, they will give you the height and centre
If you re not using the H55f ,Im not sure it will be the same

Those ref points are difficult to measure but I got 199-200mm between the front of the timing cover and the rear of the radiator cap.

Ditto that 200 mm (8" +/-)

The most meaningful measurement I could get easily was 10 3/8" from the rear of the rad support top piece to the front of the timing cover.

Right now I have about 1/2in space between the fan and back side of the radiator. Is this too close? What would happen if I do a deep water crossing? Would this possibly cause the fan blades to move forward enough to contact the back of the radiator?
I am using all 80 series drive train so all mounts are new positions.
Thanks.

Presumably you would stop and disconnect the fan belt:D
My guess is that the radiator would be more at harm from sudden stops like hitting a tree stump and the engine mounts stretching.

Can the gearbox go back? Does it affect where the gearsticks come through the floor?

The HDJ78/79 used a similar gearbox so I would try and find out where the engine sits in them if you want it close to factory

Two problems I am trying to over come. One, gettting the rear of the drive train up enough that the engine/radiator fan sits square in reference to the radiator. The other issue is that I am using the full time transfer case and it's shifter location is under the tunnel after the hole for the shifter cover. I think I can solve this by switching to the part time transfer shifter lever that bolts to the right side of the transmission.

The factory 1HZ do not sit perfectly square within the shroud. I think it is closer at the top than bottom.

FYI,this how the HDJ78 copes with the transfer case shifter being too far back

The fan tips are 4.5 cm away from the radiator at the top position. At the bottom position it was the same I think, but it was hard to see. The fan-hub had a spacing of 7.7 cm at the top.
Distance from the black cover (timing belt cover) to radiator cap edge is 20 cm and is the same as mentioned by Rosco and Jim_Hbar

Thanks for the help.
Roscoe do you happen to have any more pictures of the transfer shifter? What model exactly is this out of?

Its from a HDJ78 Troopy ,2005 . That was the best pic I could get for someone who was considering the same swap.
I think they ended using the H55f with a bigger clutch.
This is the parts diagram in the EPC. Looks like the V8 models are sing the same parts.
This is a part time set up

Which gearbox and t/case are you using and is it part time/full time? Some 80 series are part time.
