Hey y'all,

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a diesel mechanic in the Rock Hill / Fort Mill / Charlotte area. I'm new to the area (Indian Land), and don't know many reputable mechanics shops, nor do I know anyone in the area to ask about them either. Looking at the ONSC forums I've seen Toyota Techs (Fort Mill) suggested, so I gave them a call and they said they don't have much experience with Toyota diesels, but he'd ask his techs if they know of any diesel mechanics they'd suggest. In the meantime, they suggested H&H Automotive, but when I called them they said they can look at it, but that they don't do much of any engine work. He also said he didn't have anyone he could suggest as a diesel tech off the top of his head. So I'm back to square one.

As for my problem:
1HZ powered 1995 HZJ77 (with 255,000km) has a knocking sound at start up that's bothering me. It generally goes until the dash gauge reads in the operating temperature range, then fades to a near unrecognizable level (unless you know what you're listening for).
It also eats a bit of coolant - BUT - doesn't have any white/grey smoke at any time, and there's no cloudiness in the coolant. So I don't THINK it's a head gasket issue... but I may be wrong.

To anyone familiar with this area: do you have any suggested diesel techs I should go to?

To anyone familiar with the 1HZ: do you have any suggestions for things I should look at (I'm a fairly competent mechanic, just don't have much experience with diesels) - feel free to ask questions and I'll try to give more info on what's going on.

Thanks!

Call Marshall at trollholes cruisers. They are a Toyota specialist shop.about 90 minutes from Charlotte.

@Trollhole

If you call B&I Auto Machine...tell them your new in town and looking for a diesel mechanic. They are very connected to mechanics and shops...and I bet they would give you some names/places to call.

Also, you might try Fig's or CMD in CLT to see if they have a diesel specialist. I recall one of them used to have one but not sure which place.

Lastly, if you find someone let me know. I may eventually need help with HJ47 if I cant do it myself (getting tired of studying Max Ellery for diesel 2H setup)

i second Marshall he rebuilt the H in the 45.

I highly recommend reaching out to Rob Smith at Odd Iron OffRoad in Thomasvil, GA. He is not local but he is who I strongly suggest

Thanks for the tip! I know of Rob & Odd Iron. I have purchased all the LED lights he sells for the HZJ77s. He's a bit far, so I think I'm gonna try Trollhole first and see what they can do for me.

I also saw Rob's build thread for the HZJ a while back, and I just recently realized that you were the one who purchased it. I've been hoping to see your truck as I pass through Ridgeway on my way to/from my parent's house near the Sandhills. (If you ever see a black HZJ77 with 4 tall THULE bars on top, that's probably me)
