howdy, me and the miss are in Hervey bay australia, we were looking at a 85 hj60 this morning, the owners asking $3000, no rego, 388,000 kms. Drives ok but the brakes need to be re-done. (to spongy to pass certification) They dont make any obvious noises and im hoping to be able to change pads and not rotors.
Anyways the motor starts and runs fine but does anyone know what is the life expectancy of the H motors, and how expensive can getting the rotors and pads in the front done be? (probally better asked in the 60 section but since i was here. Any thoughts? Thanx.

Give Gympie 4WD Spares a call re the brake bits you need. They have a huge yard just down the road (an hour or so IIRC) from Hervey Bay and were very helpful when I needed some bits for my 80 when we were travelling through a couple of years ago.

For spongy brakes it usually air in the brake lines or MC. Good aftermarket MC are about $90.
Rear brakes out of adjustment can also give sponginess as the wheel cyl fully stretches out but makes no contact

Discs are around $60 each for a 60 series,pads are around $30-40.
Most brake shops will machine the old discs and fit new pads for under $150 inc labour.
Tell them its cash;)

Life expectancy is is relevant to the care its had. With those klms you would be lucky to get another 100000klms at the most.
If its blowing any blue smoke or doesn't start easy from a dead cold start, then walk away.
An expert opinion maybe best. I would have thought it a little on the low side for something good but there are bargains out there.

If you can manage it ,get out and look at as many as possible. Sooner or later a keen eye can spot something good

cody buy something odd, like a troopie. then you can import it after, and make some more money in Canada if you want to sell it.

A 70 series troopie would be cool. But remember it needs to be 15 yrs or older.

thanks for feed back guys! My BJ60 has 400,000KM on it but im not familiar with the H motors, it does start nice, no smoke and feels torquey but not as much "go" as i expected, but then again im used to my rig and havent driven another HJ before. The MC didnt have any visible leaks so maybe it is air or the rear needs adjusting, If we do buy this we will definately get the brakes done in Gympie. Also we are going to get this thing inspected first and will probally make an offer of about $2000-2200.

(for those canadians that dont know there is actually a town called gympie here, it sounds funny on the news when they say "today a gympie man was.....) for the aussies, the word gympie to a canadian would be like calling someone physically or mentally handicapped and would be of bad charachter to say in public.

And lastly heres some cruiser porn i saw of a 45 series with V8 in it, its for sale: 7500

Don't worry to much about brakes .. in the 60 aren't the best, anycase. with proper adjust and good MC you are done .. no big deal.

The H engine is the granpa for 2H and 12H-T engines .. same block. very relaible, but certanly slow engine. I thought it's more torque and quiet than a B series engine ..

Again buy something cool....

import it after the trip... A 40 or 70 series troopie :) :)

i almost got a bj40, called to late, and they were only asking 2K. A cheap 40 can be found here but you have to be patient and look in the papers alot, there is actually a nice bj40 near brisbane for $1500 except the motor is done, i bet a guy wouldnt have too much trouble finding a 3B for it here.
I do like the 70 series troops as well but they seem to start at around 8K, and since were only here till august and we want something to sleep in.
we did talk to the owner of the HJ60 last nite, well be getting it inspected soon and then we made an offer of 2200, unless we find there is something drastically wrong with it.

If you bought a 40 series troopie, well big enough and then some to sleep in, you could make a little profit selling it. People eat those things up in NA.

NICE RIG !!! Wayne usually has nice stuff kicking around his yard that is already to go.......................

does anyone have any ideas of the costs to bring back a vehicle, or for a canister, or for prices to import into canada? if not ill look into it this week.

About $3kAUD but you might take until August to find something decent in a 45 series troopy.

Not even repairable?

Weld a plate over it??

i dont rally want to bother tearing the frame apart on a vehicle were only driving for 4 months. plus i think id probally have to have a shop to it to be certified.
you would not believe how strict they are with the certificate of roadworthiness here. they wont give it to you if you have a dime size chip in the windshield, or enough surface rust that someone could possibly scratch themselves(isnt much).

How far from Brisbane or Sydney are you? You would have a much larger choice of vehicles in the city

Coming from Calgary it must seem pretty tight there. Alberta has the most lax vehicle safety, they don't ever ask for an inspection for any age of vehicle unless it is from out of province. Ontario would be the strictest in Canada that I know of. Every vehicle that changes hands over 2 yrs old has to have a safety. So it makes buying a beater a thing of the past.

BC is the same as Alberta with the exception the lower mainland folks need air care inspections for smog.

Instead of vehicle safeties in Canada I would just wish they would retest our licences every so often. Too many s*** drivers on the roads, far more dangerous than a vehicle with a small hole in the frame.

We have exactly the same problem here is Australia, at least in Victoria. The only time they even think about retesting for a licence is when you are over 75 years of age, or hold a B-double licence. For those who don't know a B-double is a prime mover with 2 trailers up to 26 metres long and 60 tonnes.

Back to the topic (sort of). Cody, you may have realised by now, but a lot of older beaters in SE Qld will have done a lot of beach work, and consequently may well be riddled with rust. Keep your eyes open.
