An ORIGINAL Dunlop RK3 which came off the '71 40 I had. The tire is in very good shape and doesn't look dry rotted. I have no idea as to its worth but I would think that anyone who is restoring a 40 might be interested for the sake of authenticity. Comments?

lots of things can go wrong with it other than dry rot.... what's the date code on it?

Never said it was a safe to drive on tire. After sitting in my attic for 40 years I know it would be good for a...........?

That's pretty cool David!

Did they date code tires back in '71? I was thinking that was a more recent thing (like Y2K - forward)?

There is a code but it isn't a readable date as such.

They did but it was a 3 digit code before 2000.

so a 229 or something like that could be the 22nd week of 99, 89, 79, 69, etc...... for the most part when you looked at date codes on tires back then you weren't expecting to find something older than 10 years but it did start happening in the 90s (mostly on tractor/trailers, so the 4th digit was added. )

The closest thing I can find to a date code is 5D0406, could be a serial number though. Nothing else looks like a date code.

All of the older tires with the three-coded date on tires exploded on 1/1/2000 due to not being able to distinguish between 1900 and 2000, so this one is worth a lot!!

Classic, we sit here busting his chops about dates codes, dry rot etc, and it had a new owner within literally 3 minutes of posting in the classified!

Great find, glad it's going to a new home!

Funny, posted in the main MUD forum and had two interested within minutes of each other. Now all I have to do is decide where the tire is going or do I keep it for S&G.

cool that you found that! I'd figure out what the person is planning to do with it before I gave it up. If it's for a spare tire on a fully restored show truck, great. If it's going to be hung on their wall or made into a table, Eh....

Going to the Dutch Antilles for a restoration. No dry rot, no cracks and still has good tread left.

I think I have one of those also...

Was at Trollhole's Monday evening with @JohnnyBighead who got his first 40 (Green 73) a few weeks ago out of Charlotte. The spare appears to not have been changed out in 43 years....same Dunlop RK3!

That's a pretty neat old truck. It will be the bee's knees when he gets it sorted. I think it's a great starting point for a restoration. I hope he likes it as much as I do. I almost bought it!
