Well...here we go! There are a number of these tanks in the wild on 40s, 60s, 100s, 200s, GXs, Taco's etc. There are also a few I've seen on the 80 series in the U.S., but only a couple threads here on Mud...so here's another for anyone considering adding a LRA tank. Musings below…

The why? Range...pure and simple for me. There's no way to significantly increase MPGs on a 1FZ-FE equipped 80 series, but you can significantly increase your MPJs (Miles Per Journey). I’m tired of the “range anxiety” when I’m out wheeling and need to cut an off-road trip short because I’m getting a bit low on fuel. I decided for certain on the LRA 24 Aux tank last year though during my trip to Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP. Was thinking all the way up the Sierras about how convenient it would be to be able to fill up two tanks at the bottom of the mountain and not have to pay the inflated prices at the top. We camped at Azalea campground, which is between Stoney Creek and Hume Lake. We cruised along and saw the typical sights. Morning came, and I had about 1/8 of a tank left and needed to fill up. There are 2 gas stations in this area...one at Stoney Creek and one at Hume lake, which are 45 minutes apart. Drove to Stoney Creek and sure as s***, the pumps were out of service! Plans for the day were scrapped and had to make a B-Line for Hume Lake as I knew everyone else would have to do the same. Rolled in on fumes and decided I'm getting an auxiliary tank ASAP!

The what? Long Range Automotive 24 gal auxiliary tank. I didn't want to go the jerry cans, funnels, and need for an extra swing arm on my bumper route. I definitely was not going to put gas cans in my truck or on my roof rack. LRA makes a main tank replacement and a couple of different aux tanks. I decided on the smaller 24 gallon aux as it provides nearly DOUBLE the range and tucks fairly neatly in the spare tire area. Push a button and your main tank fills while you drive. Freakin slick setup for what I do with my truck...mild-moderate off-road, camper, family explorer extraordinaire!

The who? Cruiser Brothers! Started with a PM to @wardharris which led to a phone call and he told me about the Long Range Automotive company. Ward explained how he and Georg formed a partnership in the Cruiser Brothers, which sells the tanks among many other cool parts including the Harrop locker, which I also have. I told Ward I wanted Georg to install the tank as I wanted someone who knows what they’re doing and was willing to make the 350 mile drive up to his shop to get it installed right. Ward ensured the tank was at Georg’s shop upon my arrival. Talked to Georg on the phone and set a date.

The where? Valley Hybrids in Stockton. Valley Hybrids? I thought this @orangefj45 guy was a Land Cruiser specialist…maybe he just works on Prius batteries as his main gig and LCs on the side I thought. Ummm…NO! The irony of the shop name set in as the bay doors opened at 8:00 AM and his crew started rolling out lifted, armored, and burbling Land Cruisers to make way for my truck on the lifts. Fully staffed shop that were very accommodating and easy to work with. In short, highly recommend going with Ward and Georg if you want the tank and want a smooth and hassle-free purchase and install.

The Install: My truck has a DC Fabrications rear bumper, which is similar to the 4X4 Labs rear bumper.

Measurements: With the auxiliary tank full on an 80 with OME 850/860 springs, the weight will drop the rear approximately 1/2 inch as my pre-installed measurements were 22.5 center of hub to flare.

The tank is sloped. Lowest point of tank is approximately 20 inches from the bottom of a flat garage floor with 315/75/16 wheels. For reference, the clearance from the bottom of a White Knuckle slider is 19 inches. Highest point of tank is approximately 23 inches of clearance.

The magic button: press the button and you can hear an audible pump fill from the auxiliary to the main tank. You can press and fill to full or press and stop filling as needed. If you accidentally leave the button on it will auto stop and also pump from the main back to the auxiliary if you overfill. Fill rate appears to be about 2-3 gallons per minute.

All set and ready for 500-600 mile range of exploration...

Nice clean installation. I recently made the same LRA mod on my '92, but with a different filler neck. It's one of the best mods you can make for a travel truck, in my opinion. For what it's worth, I get 650-700 miles of range with the 3FE on mostly highway under light loads. I love it - no more range stress - I'm sure you will too. Congrats.

Great write up, thanks !

Bought mine back in 2009 from Man-A-free. Nothing free about it . Still working fine.

Didn't know the tanks have been available that long...good to know it's still working reliably!

Well...can't believe it! First fill up since installing the tank...almost a month! Made the trip to Costco and both tanks were dry. Truck is only my weekend driver but still a good feeling to not have to stop at the pump so often. Upside: range is fantastic! Downside: increased tank pressure. My charcoal canister is clogged and needs replacing. 2 tanks makes this even more evident. You can also hear the aux tank flexing as the pressure increases/decreases. Upside: pushing that fill button and watching the needle go from empty to full is cathartic to me...really useful modification. Downside: people in Costco line loath you! Upside: I saved $15 on about 47 gallons as compared to my usual spot...should pay for itself in no time! couldn't get a pic of total gallons as Costco only allows $100 per card. Had to break out two cards...

After the recent trip to Tellico this one is a must. I DD my 80. Recent regear/PT kit enhanced fuel mileage from 10.8 average to 13.9 average for all around driving. With my M100 trailer and stock gears it netted around 7.6 mpg. It will be better with the regear but the aux. tank is still a must.

Nearly 50 gallons of fuel changes the rules of the game considerably...:zilla:

Jeez I would kill to have that range, what a luxury-luxury price too. Can't we do this cheaper? I see some kits under 500 in aluminum, not fancy design but there is a lot of real estate down there. One would think other tanks would fit there as well such as this aftermarket 19 gallon behind-axle tank from Amazon for 83 bucks, or this 15 gallon tank for $136 that is 30x12x9H.

You didn’t tell us where you put the spare and I dont see it on the back?

This time of the year is my biggest saving with the aux tank. With my travels being in CA ($1+per gal more) and Mexico at over $4/gal Im saving on every trip. Regular in Phoenix is now running $2.29/gal.

So no issues having the Aux tank shipped into KA? Thought there were 'issues' with smog cert. here? Who did you purchase the tank from to get it shipped to KA. IIRC importer up in the PNW wouldn't ship to KA?

There are always cheaper options of literally anything. Cheaper usually doesn't equate to better though, especially something as critical as a fuel system. The LRA aux system is a quality unit that has been time-tested in the Australian extremes. Additionally this tank holds the equivalent of 5 Jerry cans of additional fuel. Phil's point regarding savings at the pump is valid and shouldn't be overlooked if you plan to keep your 80 or travel often. You can do the OEM subtank but that requires sourcing a tank, straps, filler, pump, electrical, etc and it is 15 gal vs LRA 24 gal. I wanted a new plug & play unit and this is it. My spare goes on my roof rack when out in the bush for now. Still waiting on @LandCruiserPhil to make some more interior tire carriers as that's my future system.

Sorry if I said I would let you know when back in stock. Carriers in stock, 2 went out last week.

As someone who has long been considering an auxiliary tank mod (as I'm sure many have) would you be willing to share the ballpark price of the tank/professional install? I'm sure mileage may vary (pun intended), just curious of the ballpark.

Congrats on the range increase! Looks like a super clean install.
