lockrite/aussie locker install issue, help!

Darn dude. I was thinking maybe if one wheel hung up the other would cause the locker to go nuts.

If it helps at all here is what mine looks like:

I just took out the old and put in the new. Thrust washers on the same side as before.

this section of the install guide doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

"Section 5: Testing Your Installation
1. Be sure that the vehicle is safely blocked. Leave the
axle assembly on the jack stands, with both tires free to rotate
and the emergency brake off.
2. Put the transmission and transfer case in gear to
lock the drive shaft. it wants it in "Drive"? I assume P is fine for an auto
3. Rotate one of the tires in the forward direction with
your hand until it stop, then hold it. does it want me to block it, or secure it as I switch to the other side? That side of the LOCKRIGHT
is now locked.
4. Rotate the other tire in the opposite (reverse) direction.
The LOCK-RIGHT should “click” as the coupler attached to
the axle rotates.
5. Rotate the first tire in the reverse direction and hold it; again, do I need somone here to hold it, block it, or should it spin freely?
repeat step 3, rotating the other tire in the forward direction.
6. Repeat steps 2 - 4, rotating and holding the second tire
to lock the second side."

thanks for the help, this seems like it should be a lot easier, I am still stumped though.

Yeah you need some one to hold it, or jam it somehow.

it says "rotate till it stops"? does this mean it will lock and not turn anymore or just until one of the teeth catch, I can still turn it off the teeth.

In gear one tire should spin and then stop. Have someone hold it. Then rotate the other tire the opposite direction and it should click-click-click.

emkaaaay, on the Lockright 1630 for 60 series, is there supposed to be a spring within the spring?

because, I have a single spring with a little metal slug at the end, no double inside super spring....

older LR's have a single spring.

Any pics of the teeth in the locker?

It's possible it is just plain wore out.

the box is dated 2007, and the locker looks virtually brand new, teeth are sharp and crisp.


could weak springs be causing this? when I wedge a flat head in between the two "drivers" and force them out, it locks up great.

it looks like in the last video that the springs are weak.

the thing is that the springs really do not do much other than keep a light amount of tension on the case halves.

It's possible that new springs will remedy this, but the center pin really does the work "locking" the teeth together.

The thrust washers are way too thin or they are absent. Are you sure they aren't still stuck on to the side gears?

When properly installed there is only enough clearance for one side to ratchet, never both.

In your parts left over the larger side gears look like they still have the thrust washers on them.

Turn these over and let's see if you still have the thrust washers on the back. I bet you do...

thrust washers are definately on both sides, you see both of them here...

I'm calling Richmond today, if they say springs may help I'll order some, if not I'll pull it back apart and measure the pinion clearance.

Yep, they are on there. Perform the test and see if you fail. You are going to need to go in there to install the new springs anyway. Both my LRs had the small and large spring combos. And they were purchased at least 8 years ago.

Posting from my blackberry so keepin it short.

Called Powertrax/Richmond, according to # stamped on unit its not theirs. Its a Detroit, Trutrac/EZ??? Either way, called Detroit, they said the part # is for a LC but they stopped making them because they are s***. They said to check the teeth for wear and also measure the gap John had suggested, although they do not offer tolerances. Either way, I'm not optimistic, I'm about ready to pull it and make it into a spool.

As far as i remember from a few years back they worked the same way as an Aussie.

Sounds like it is either not got the right thrust washers or just wore slam out.
