Hi all.

I was wondering if anyone has done Lockhart Basin...and if anyone has done it backwards? On the way to CM06 My dad and I were going to stay just south of Canyonlands and then take lockhart Basin to moab but was wondering if it is doable in reverse or if there are things that are best done only in one direction? I have my set up in below and My dad in in a locked 80 with 33's and armer and 2.5" lift.

thanks

Last year, I went from Canyon Lands to Moab via Lockhart Basin in my stock unlocked 4Runner running 31" tires. A few spots were fun, nothing to worry about.

I've done it twice. Once from Moab to Canyonlands and once the other way. 99% of it is easy dirt road, but spectacularly beautiful. There is a narrow canyon near the northern end that is quite difficult going up-hill, depending on the year. 2 years ago when I went through from North to South, the dirt was super loose, and even locked it took a good momentum shot to get up. There is not anyway to bypass that. From south to North, that section is down hill, and much easier. Lockhart is unbelieveably beautiful and lonely. There is a side canyon you can descend about half way that takes you down to the river. There is a good camp spot there if you are inclined.

Look for us! We are going to be camping out in the Beef Basin/Elephant Hill area from Sunday-Wednesday and will be headed for Moab on Wednesday via Lockhart Basin. We'll have a nice camp/dinner Tuesday night if you want to find us and hang out. It should be me, Alvarorb, Willie, Desertdude, and Sam(not on ih8mud).

If you have a 2 meter Ham radio, I think we'll be on 146.460 MHz, plus the Moab Valley repeater frequency.

Send me a PM if interested and we'll figure out a way to meet up.

Thanks sounds good...I don't have a ham radio but with pm you and we can try and hook up on tuesday night...what are you running sunday-tuesday?

I know this is a very old thread, but we are looking at doing Lockhart in reverse as well. Where is the entrance to the south end? Any GPS coordinates or recommendations?

Can a stock Suburban make it through that last tricky part on the north end?

Unlikely. Not a good place for a stock Suburban. You could drive in from the south most of the way and then turn around and go back. It's worth seeing and doesn't take that long.

There are several tricky places where at least some lift is a good thing.

I've been there 2 more times since this thread, and it's gotten a bit worse over time.

Thanks, Andrew. I think we are going to head in from the south and then turn around before it gets too hairy. I am also thinking that we are going to hit Beef Basin as well.

We ran it on Tuesday, south to north. It is much smoother than ever before, all of the rock in the exit canyon is gone, the last drop into the wash is smoothed, pretty much a ramp. Still don't think I would be comfortable taking a stock Suburban in there?
