Anyone know of a local shop that can rebuild a PS Gearbox (not the Pump).
Theres on in TX that people use, but its a couple week turnaround and a lot of shipping costs.

Aw man I thought you had found one! Well I'm interested too. My steering is pretty loose, I've tried tightening the screw but doesn't do much.

Well I went ahead and pulled the Gearbox. I'm going to send it to West TX Offroad. Its $140 plus shipping, not bad.
They seem to have a good rep
I will post up my experience.

Wow that sounds like a good price. Hopefully it works out. Did they quote turnaround time?

The guy I spoke to said normally 3 days.
The shipping was 33$ UPS ground (32lbs). Not sure what they will add on for shipping on the way back.

I left the Pitman Arm on, they said it was fine. One less thing to deal with.
I also ordered a TRE kit from CruiserOutfitters. Figure I'll get the sterring as good as possible.

Are you going to be able to go back to Crozet in Aug?

Update West TX Offroad

I got the PS box back from West TX Offroad.
They actually turned it around Same Day.
They got it last Fri and sent it back out that evening.
Total time 10days UPS Ground.
The shipping was $33 each way and they re-boxed with expanding foam.

$140 for the job
So it was a little of $200 total

The leak appears to be gone and it does feel better.
Time will tell.

The Pitman arm was off and in the box so I just had to re-install.
Still easier to let them remove it.

The folks at West TX are great to deal with. I would definately recommend them.

BTW, they can also get you box setup for ram assist. I didnt do it.

That sounds like a great deal! So the steering doesn't feel loose anymore?

Well it is still no corvette, but it is tighter than it was.
I had play on the north side of the box, towards the steering wheel. I could move the steering wheel a couple inches with no corresponding movement on the pitman arm.

This seems to be a lot better if not gone completely.

The leak is gone which is 50% of why I got it done.

I had hoped that the occasional "not quite death" wobble would go away but I still have a bit of it.

I also did the TRE kit while I was down there. That included the TREs plus the Drag link ends. $108 from Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters. Pretty good deal I think. I know those are different on the 80.

Do you think you have a Gear Box issue? Or are you still diagnosing it?

Dave

Did they clean up the box any? Im needing a 60 box rebuilt for my 40 and its a little rusty.

Yeah, it looked like it had been cleaned and somewhat painted.
Mine wasnt rusty cause it had been soaking in ATF for so long.
