Ham ticket? Ham radios? My uncle is big into ham radios, sure he could get me setup fairly cheap. Will have to talk to him about that.

When you discuss this with your uncle, let him know that we are using 2M mobile and almost all communication on the trail is simplex. He will know what that means and will get you set up with the right gear. See if he will loan you an HT for listening on the Christmas tree run.

He can also point you in the right direction for the technician test which is the only requirement for your license. The Morse code requirement was removed many years ago so don't worry about that if you've seen him using it in his shack.

I've been talking with a guy that's with HDARC (Marty Soffran) and he sent all kinds of PDF study guides, all the test questions and more for Technician and General. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll pass them along.

They offer the test on the third Saturday of each month at the police substation across from Cibola HS. I'm shooting for taking the test in December so there will be one less thing for people to give me crap about (especially sl33p3). Many people have just taken online practice exams for a couple weeks before and memorized enough answers to pass the test.

Victim mentality Marc? Don't worry about it though, we'll find something new to give you crap about once you get your ticket. :flipoff2:

I'm guilty of using this method.

Me too, but ... when I took my General test they confused the snot out of me. While the questions did appear in the practice test, the live test I took mixed up the answers. If you get used to an answer being "B" you might get it wrong.

Wow, so Technician test you can just memorize A B or C. You guys did get me looking into a radio. Talked to my uncle about getting licensed. I may try to go for it in December as well. For now, will a Handheld Transceiver be fine for trail communications? Or do you recomend I get a mobile radio. Found a basic 144mhz mobile 75w radio for $165. Seems like a handheld isnt much cheaper than that anyway. I dont see myself making a hobby of it (although I do have a very addictive personality, so who knows). Most of you guys run handheld or mobile?

Most of us run Yaesu mobile radios.

X2.

Get the FT-2900 (mil spec) and one of each:

Comet SBB1
Comet SBB2

And a very good ground strap. Good to go....you can talk to dudes sitting in their underwear in their basements in Sweden all day long.

Thats exactly the one I was looking at :D. 2900 is the 75w version I mentioned above. Damn Im good :D

And all this time we thought you chasing the ladies? :flipoff2::lol:

Most of us have more than one antenna. We use the SBB-1 which is a rubber duck when crashing through the trees and don't want to bust the antenna. Many will also get a longer antenna when we really want to reach out and touch somebody. SBB-7, SBB-5, or CA-2X4 will get you out there.

i use the sbb 1 for daily and trees, and the sbb 25 for long range, both comet antennas. highly recommend NMO antenna mount style, most of us use them, means you can swap loan borrow etc easier.

we mentioned the HAM sticky thread pappy started right?

We might not have mentioned it in this thread yet. I compiled it for exactly this reason. :grinpimp: https://forum.ih8mud.com/nm-high-desert-cruisers/497137-collection-ham-radio-discussions.html#post6751518

I'm about the only person, if not the only person, that uses UHF mounts. No problem for me because the CA-2X4 only comes with the UHF mount and it is by far my favorite antenna.

Yes. Several members in the club bring an HT along with their mobile radio. The HT can be used as a loaner and for communicating when outside the vehicles (recovery, hiking, chasing lost dogs.)
