Hello everybody,

I have been on the forum since early September when I picked up my FJ40. Took me about a month and a half to get her on the road, and am loving every minute of it. Thought I post up here and meet the local crowd. Hope to see you all around, gonna try to make the tree run.

Here she is:

WOW, very old school FJ40. What year? 62/63? Tell us about her.

Welcome to the group. Come on out to the tree run. I just might need to suck it up and bring my 40.

Its a 64 model year titled in 65. I bought it from the grandson of the original owner who bought it in Denver, so I'm kind of the 2nd owner I guess. It was passed down to son, then grandson, but the grandfather was the last to drive it before me. It has 120k miles on it, and it sat in their back yard for 15 years where I picked it up with no idea of what it would take to get her running. Got it home, replaced the water pump, changed oil, fresh antifreeze, new Weber 32/34 carburator, new plug wires and the old F fired right up and ran smooth. I have a Rough Country 4" lift with shocks and 33x12.5 BFG Muds. Next major investment will be LockRight lockers in the rear (appears to be the only option for any traction control with the old coarse spline). I've had her out in the mesa many times, and down the Puerco from Southern to I40 once. This is my first 4x4, and am thoroughly addicted. I dream of wheeling everyday :D.

I am planning a proper restoration of the body and frame, possibly next winter once my brother gets his 66 Bug finished and out of the way of the proper tools and space. But until then I am going to enjoy the hell out of it :steer:.

,
Josh

Nice truck and great story on how it got in your hands.

You'll fit right in Josh. :flipoff2:

That's a great rig, congrats on the score. You should upgrade to fine-spline rear shafts when you do the locker, they are a direct swap. Maybe they are still in that 55 at the PnP. Then start looking for a complete front axle and upgrade the ball/fork axles for birfields (and disk brakes while you're at it). Then.... :)

Thats what I was wondering, so basically I can just swap the axles along with whatever carrier setup I want in the rear keeping the same housing?

Also when swaping the front assembly, will the drive shaft bolt right up? Thought I read somewhere that you had to change the transfer case output shaft and run the newer drive shaft to swap fronts.

David, I'm confused.

On the diff, I thought the course spline was at the pinion. I thought the splines on the axles were all the same.

The front axle on the 55 will be drum, but it can be converted to disk. As of Sunday everything you need was at the UPull. Axle from the 55, knuckles from a 82 mini.

I love those old corrugated hard tops!

the very old stuff I believe had coarse splines at the axles too. I know the outer fronts did. I think '66 was the cut off for the inners to fine spline. not totally sure, going off old guy memory. it's been forever if at all since I've seen my '63's inner axles.

if you swap the front for birfs, KEEP those old ball and claws for nostalgia. I have a set in the garage and it is a nice conversation piece. I've seen a shifter made from one too. oh, and welcome!:flipoff2:

My 69 had course Birfields up front with fine spline axles, and fine spline axles out back with course pinion. I think that's right.

Thanks for the welcome!

From what I've gathered, they updated the axles in mid 68 (could be 69) Everything before that was 10 spline at the carrier and even less at the wheels, maybe 5 or 7 spline with ball and claw steering joints. The rear is the same 10 spline carrier. There is a set of 71 axles front and back for sale on craigslist right now for $150 each, but dont have the funds for it at the moment, and also unsure about how "direct" the bolt up is. Did they ever change the design of where the drive shaft bolts to the pinion shaft?

I guess if it is possible to just swap internals for the rear, I could just get the front axle for now. Now y'all already got me spending money THANKS!!!!

yes the drive shaft flange pattern changed, but not 'till around '74 when the t-case changed slightly. I have like 5 drive shafts laying around here. if you end up needing one that fits your stuff, you can have it.

and yes, we are good at spending other's $..it's so much easier.:flipoff2:

If the UPull still has the axles under the FJ55 they will cost you about $90 complete, but you will need to pull them.

edit: That's $90 each.

welcome ************

Thanks

Ham ticket? Ham radios? My uncle is big into ham radios, sure he could get me setup fairly cheap. Will have to talk to him about that.

BTW, just installed 6* shims in the front perches, and WOW!!! I've seen others say this, and I will say it myself.... I dont know how I drove it without them. It actually drives straight down the road without white knuckles. Hit 70 for the first time and its not bad at all. Before anything over 45 had me puckering pretty good. Lesson learned . Still gotta get the 4* in the back to get rid of some vibrations (hopefully), prolly tomorrow. Then I'll be ready to run down 550 for the tree run :D

Most noobs are instructed to borrow a CB from someone in the club on your early runs. But the majority of communication occurs on Amateur Radio frequencies because the range and clarity is so much better. You'll start to feel like you don't know what's going on because you'll only occasionally get updates on the CB. Most folks in the club take the technician test and get licensed for basic use. I'm still one of the long-term holdouts. It's not that I don't want to get on the bandwagon. I just have never been motivated or disciplined enough to take the test.
