Hi Everyone,

I just bought a LJ70 "1986,2L, G40, G254" and had some initial thoughts about it!

I was reading the posts about it and got that it's a light duty version of the FJ70. Because of the axles, tranny....but here is my question, what about the frame is it also light duty? Does it differ a lot than the FJ70? Can I fit the body of an FJ70 on the frame of a LJ70? If yes then can I fit a 12H engine with a H55 trans on it?
And if not what the best diesel engine that will fit without any drastic changes?

I know it sounds a bit complicated, but I like the 70's series but don't like the bumpy ride of the leaf springs!

I'm gone post some pictures later. As I'm doing the major repairs to get it at least running! :D

I really need some brainstorming so I appreciate any ideas....

Thanks in advance
Issa

depending on the year (since i have only checked the pre-1992 units)
the bodymounts are the same from the engine back, the front cross member is different so you will need to fab up the HD front fender mounts.
i have thought with the HD front clip the coil suspension of the short wheel base LJ would make for a kickass wheeling /daily driver...

I'll take some pictures & measurements from underneath and post them, but as soon as I get the car from the mechanic. By the way they have the same wheelbase & length on the Toyota codes file I have.

What about the frame is it solid enough to outstand the power from a 12H?

Sorry for being stupid, but what's the HD stands for??

I cant wait to see the modifications most 7* series share the same type of frame rails, are you going to keep the 8" front and rear axles, they should hold up for a while, GOOD LUCK!
ps HD stand for heavy duty

Um have you guys forgotten that the light duty trucks have about a foot less frame at the front? Anyhing longer than a 1KZ is going to be a tight fit. That 12H is gonna stick right though the rad. It would be way easier to coil spring a HD truck.

The engine compartment is slighly shorter indeed and could accomodate a 6 with a good bit of work but the frame is the same length.

Bruce, it looks like you are right ...sort of...

i compared the LJ71 and the BJ70, the front sheet metal on the LD (light duty) is recesed back towards the engine where as the sheet metal in the HD (Heavy duty) is slightly forward of the frame crossmember...
the dimentions are the same for all except the front fender mounts...looking aat the blueprints the frame itself is the same length but on the light duty the front cross memeber IS back further towards the engine than the HD so bruce you could very well be right...the back of the front cross member on the HD is 1125 mm from the front cab mount aand on the LD the FRONT of the cross member is 1047 mm from the front body mount...

interesting, never knew that before...

I have also considered to do a conversation of my LJ73 into a HZJ73. A HD OME coil suspension and a HZJ donor for the body and engine mount sound very interesting. The biggest chalenge is maybe the 12/24V swap if I not replace everything from the HZJ. How is the fender and the bonet mount to the chassis. Is it the same as the LJ (manual trans)?

Rikard : Nice pics, theres plenty of the 75 in Hurghada, next time you have to visit the western desert.

lowenbrau: The 12H is maybe a bit tight for the body of the LD, but if I'm gone replace the whole body with a HD ? It should give the space I need, am I right?

Crushers: I'm very bad in car terminologies, but I'm a fast learner! So what exactly is the cross memebr? Is it the perpendicular part on the 2 rails of the frame?

Prado t: If I will be able to fit the HD body, most probably I'll buy a whole
H-BJ70 and will use the axles of it.

I don't mind doing minor mods and welds to the frame and body, but no major ones. The car won't be trustworthy as if it's stock, so that's why I didn't coil spring my FJ70. I was in a search for a 73 but they are very hard to find here.

cross member the pipe or channel that runs from one frame rail to the other...
you really shoudl buy a shop chassis manual... it would be of great benefit to your challenge ahead...

I have the Chilton manual US models for the FJ60 and 4 Runner but at home. I'm at work at the moment.

Can I avoid the cross member by replacing the engine mounts as the difference is less than 1 cm ?

the difference is 75 mm or 3"... witht eh F engien being longer than the 4 banger i would suggest measuring the frotn of the F engine from the firewall and see how much room you will need...
relocating the cross member is a no go since it is also the mount for the front track bar...

Geeeeeeeze,.....!!!!!!!!?????????/ i would like to get the front sheetmetal, hood fenders grill....when we were in Finland a few years ago Lori's brother has a 87 light duty absolutely loved it, in that country they use those machines!

Wayne...I bought the car for cheap price because it's in a bad condition. I'm willing to to do some mods with a limited budget, but if it's a lot of welding and major frame mods I'd rather resell the car and start the search again for a FJ73...I'm sure it will take some time!

As I said before the only thing I'm willing to do any welding on it is the Engine, Transmission and Body mounts.

What about the 13BT, it's a smaller engine that should fit easily? And what about the auto transmission and tranny of a 13BT will it fit easily or it will require a lot work, too?

I drove the car today and I must say the coil springs are a hell of an invention! ;)

Thanks lowenbrau this gave me Hope again! :D

yep, so i am trying to understand what he did, it seems he reworked the front so the rad is sitting forward into the front sheet metal...

hummm, i would love to see this one in person...

crazy norsemen...
