hi, I need urgently help.
I'm going to buy an '91 Prado LJ78 EX 2.4l, 101hp with 88500 km.
Now I read a lot about engineproblems with cracked cyl heads.
The car is in an exellent condition. I live in Senegal and Mali, so it's very hot and I need to drive very long distances (Bamako - Dakar about 1500 km). Can someone give me a hint concerning the engine? there is a Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8l, 125hp....

I hope someone can give me an idea.. Thx Wolfsen

run away from the LJ78...
enough said.

the Pajero 2.8 is supposed to be a good engine...

Take it .They do long miles with proper servicing.

Take the pajero.

sorry, but wich car you ment? the LH 78 EX?

anyway thx for the hints..

The one I included in my original quote;) (pajero)

I dont think the body is as tough as the Toyota,as some of the newer models Mitsu have been known to flex too much.
But in your conditions a reliable engine is paramount.

i talked to the owner of the prado and he told me they did some modifcations to the cooling system as they installed an oil-cooler for the transmission an the radiator, as well I'm wondering the different of hp, usually the 2lte is mentioned with 97hp but the actual car comes along wth 101hp?
maybe i'm stupid, but i really would like to go for the toyota.
Is there a possibility to find out if there are already headchange has been made?

tnx wolfsen

to be blunt,
yes, you are stupid
you ask on a toyota forum which is the better investment and the concenses is go for the Mits and yet you still want to buy the LJ78 time bomb...

why did you even bother to ask?

i do not care if they rebuilt the engine out of gold it is a POS
but
it is not my money so i do not care.

i would say you would be better off taking the money and setting it on fire on your kitchen table than buying the LJ but< see sig line>

Things to note on this and many other discussions:

1) don't buy the Toyota LJ78
2) Do listen to Wayne

I think if you follow this advice you'll be much happier down the road

I've talked to a Japanese auto mechanic that now resides in Vancouver Canada, he stated that the older 2.5 mitsu engines compared to the 2LTE were a poorer design, as for the newer 2.8 in the mitsus maybe its better.

Just to let you know I've put on 60,000kms on my 2LTE and no problems, maybe I've got the diamond in the rough but there must be others out there too. My opinion the LJ-78 is a better truck, the only complaint being the motor.

I think if unabused by the previous owner and then taken care of properly you can have years of trouble free driving.

hummm, much better choice, get the BEB done and you are golden...

ok, i see it has more than 3.4l..
but, sorry I ask, what's BEB?

... and please forgive the beginner.

Big end bearings. Catch them before damage occurs and have them checked every 100000klms.
You cannot tell from the outside till its too late.
5-6 hrs labour and about $120AUD for ACL bearings

pic of a spare engine I have
1HZ PICS 007 (Medium).webp

thank's for the explanation, after a little wikipedia-research, I figuered out what was meant (technical side I prefer german). Hopefully BEB leave me allone until I'll arrive from GB in Senegal (only about 7500 km). At home i can handle the price for the mechanic....
and crusher, thank's for being blunt ;), but at least my decision was based to finding simply a much better offer of Toyota. I wouldn't take the mitsu and at a 60% chance to fail, it rests a 40% chance to win... I love gambling... so I would have been gone for the LJ 78, but finally I'm not stupid enough to leave the better choice allone, which is the TD 5dr Diesel-engine!

so tnx to all, I'll give a feed back how it's ended up at about ends of september... wolfsen

I would get the LJ78. The car as a whole is much simpler and easier to repair and hardier than the Pajero.
The 2L-TE is a good motor but prone to problems if not treated right. Personally a motor is easily and cheaply replaced. Mine has a cracked head and Chemiweld didn't help. Once it goes I will just throw in a prepared banger with a new head.
Don't forget you buy the car for the car and not the motor. The Pajero has too many fiddly bits and torsion bars up front, I think. A friend of mine has a 97 Pajero and is always in the workshop same goes for others I know with a current model with the same problems.
Choose a car on it's merits as a complete package and not whats under the bonnet. In this case I say take the LJ.

i keep hearing how the Pajero is weaker than the Prado but yet to see the 2.5 die. i have 'heard' of two in Canada and have not come across any articles on the net in the 4 years i have been bringing in the pajero, Delica vehicles compared to the hundreds of LJ/LN dying.

the net is flooded with LN/LJ engiens dying their $$$ and painful deaths

is this just brand loyalty speaking or do you have some facts to back your claims?

Turbotojo... are you for real? don't buy a car for what is under it's bonnet? that is pure unadulterated BS M8... when was the last time you tried to buy a 2LTE cheap? and easy to find in good shape? give your head a good shake, you got some crap stuck between the ears.
