Hello,

A couple questions..

I have a 1991 Prado 2L-TE and was wondering how much coolant I would need after a coolant flush? Also I would assume that using Toyota Red is the way to go..Is is best 50% with distilled water? Is adding Dex cool advised? I found it at a Richmond Toyota dealer for $18.40/4 litres. Are there better places to buy it?

On to the oil filter. I know that I need a Toyota 90915-30002...kinda pricey.. I've also read to stay away from the Fram PH 6357..What about the Wix 51368? Or the Baldwin 7029? I also saw that Amsoil has filters too. I intend to put some Amsoil oil in and the intervals will be longer, so I would like some knowledge on the filters.

I probably would have bought the Toyota one from the dealer..but the parts guy was a jerk. He says..Oh do you got one of those Japanese units? I say ..Yes I do..He says ..Thats too bad..then smugly..Good Luck. WTF?

Thanks

Bakasan

Sorry to hear about the bad experience at the Richmond Toyota, try to talk to Jamie,he is good to deal with.Check on the coolant again, they sell 2 different styles, one is a premix 50/50 and the other is the red unmixed,I think they have it advertized at $14.99 + eco fee.
I found the dealer unfortunately to be the cheapest for the oil filters, unless as some have done ordering them in bulk from the US.

James..

Your 2L-TE

Hi Bakasan

Go with the Toyota oil filter. It's a dual element and probably the best you can do for your Prado. Toyota recommends 10K for that filter. Also use the 50/50 with distilled H2O. You want to do all you can for that cooling sys. If memory serves me right I needed about 4 to 5 liters to get 50/50. Have you changed the water pump?

Just today I had my second experience with a d--- head at a Toyota dealer. Was inquiring about valve shims and got a very snooty "We don't supply anything for those RHD's" This was the second time I got that kind of reception from Toyota in Campbell River. I'll never set foot in that place again. The guys at Brian Rice Toyota in Courtenay are totally friendly and eager to help me out. When I want a new FJ or some other Toy I sure know where I won't go.

Good luck

just as a side note Penticton toyota sells JDM cruisers...

Regarding coolant and oil filters:

DO NOTuse Dex Cool. It is deadly to cooling systems and engines and should be outlawed (note pending suits in the USA).

You need to have at least a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water. Using a hydrometer it should read -36C or better. I would strongly recommend that you go with at least a 60/40 mix.

Make totally sure you flush your cooling system thoroughly if you have Dex Cool in it. There are some good chemicals for doing this, the crystals tend to work better than the liquid versions since they are usually more concentrated. Flush your cooling system until it runs spotlessly clear out of all ports - it takes time to do - well over an hour and sometimes 2.

As for filters and other Toyota issues: if you get any kind of grief from a Toyota parts person or Toyota employee, do us all a favour and file a complaint with the department manager. You should only get a polite response indicating that they cannot source certain parts since they don't have listings for the JDM stuff.

Having said that, try to support businesses that are JDM friendly and go the extra distance to try and help out. Sourcing parts for some JDMs can be a difficult and frustrating experience, a little understanding on your part goes a long way - plus you should have been an informed purchaser in the first place.

On the Island, you can try E4 Auto Repair (Duncan) 250 746 8977 or Radd Cruisers (Parksville/Nanaimo) 250 954 3990 and they can either help you or point you in the right direction.
