Hi there! New to the site. Just bought a 72 FJ40. Been building Early Broncos for 16 years. Looking forward to jumping in to this FJ40.

Has anyone put together a list of FJ40 and non-FJ40 vehicles that are good sources/alternatives for upgrades such as disc brakes
power steering box/pump/bracket, radiators
electronics

Thank you!!

Brandon

Yes, it's called IH8MUD 😄

Seriously though, start with the FAQ and the search function.

Thanks for the welcome!

Yeah I was trying the search on a couple different topics and couldn’t seem to find what I was looking for. Maybe just need to get used to the speech functionality.

Thanks middlecalf.

Wasn’t so much looking for actual parts for sale. More so looking to see what other vehicles (or part numbers) are good sources for upgrades. For example, a popular disc brake conversion on 66-77 Eaely broncos is to source the knuckles and parts from a 73-79 F-150 and also the calipers from a 70a era Thunderbird.

A popular brake booster upgrade is a hydroboost unit from a 91-94 Chevy Astrovan.

Wasn’t sure if there was a similar list for FJ40s

Thanks again!

The information is here, but not presented in the fashion in which you are hoping/expecting unfortunately. Best bet is to search using a couple key words at a time and read through the threads that pop up. In many cases some of the best tech is buried in threads as the discussion develops and the “wise and knowledgeable” weigh in with their experience.

There arent any shortcuts unfortunately, you just need to spend lots of time reading and researching. The big difference between the 40 and bronco is length of time produced. This leads to many many changes througout the production life. Add in that non-us spec trucks had different parts and lots of South American trucks are finding their way into the US market now, and you could think you have it all figured out and things not work as the internet said it would.

Good luck in your quest and start up a dedicated build thread on the ‘72 youre working on now. Starting a new thread for every single small question you have will end up with folks staying quiet and not being as helpful as they would in a single concentrated thread where you present your work and questions/problems. Lots of people will share their wealth of knowledge if its obvious that someone has done their research and tried to come to the answer on their own.

Don't ignore 'Build' threads either. Lots of good tech discussion happens in them

This is the best info I've read in a while, all distilled down into a couple of paragraphs.

A lot of upgrades are to use parts off later model 40's. Check out faq's at the top of the 40 section. Some of the info is older but still good info to start. Just scroll down and find what your looking for. In that section there's a link to tech links too. A disc brake conversion typically uses later model knuckles and the outer components along with fine spline birfields. To start look in faqs. Scroll down to frt ends and read the 1st 2 threads to understand the subtle difference of large and small pattern knuckles and long and short fine spline birfields.
