Folks,

Trying to make my FJ40 DD with softer ride.

Here is what I'm thinkin... remove 2 leaf springs and add coil springs. Like in this picture... Apparently Australians do this to their Troopy.

Has anyone done this ? Which leafs did you removed ? Was the ride softer and better ?

I'm not worried about axle wrap as much becuase this FJ is for family cruising and will barely ever see offroad.

I might be wrong but they look original as they came with the truck.

I read the Australian postings and they say it made a huge difference in comfort and driveability ... So I thought I should try it too. Look pretty simple mod but I wanted to get some input from expert in this forum.

The web page says that you having sagging leaf springs are actually better for this mod.

Per the web link above... The coils will take the load off from springs and make the ride more comfortable....

I would start by simply removing one leaf from the spring pack, it really made a difference for my ride. It sat rather high with the OME springs and also was very hard, but after the removal of only one layer is settled a bit and become much more drivable. Note, I only removed a layer from the back end.

My concern would be becoming "double spring loaded", particularly on the rear end where you have no engine weight ???

I remember reading Mark W used to run leaf spring SOA with coils to help carry load for running heavy set up 40s in alaska. different application than what your after but might be some info to compare to there if you search.

I’m guessing your bushings are newish and your shackles are not over tightened and pinching the bushings?

Bilstein shocks dramatically helped my rig with 4” lift. Bigger bumps that were painful at 30 are now doable at 45mph. Try them first, then see if you want to experiment with removing a single leaf in each pack.

Thanks guys... I will try to install new EMU shocks and see if those help. Australians web postings says ... its a trail n error things so I might have to try different things.
