My 7/70 is a 3 on the tree. I have a decent leak coming from the front of the transmission. I thought it was my rear main but my engine isn't burning a drip. I guess it's the seal around the front shaft. My t/o bearing area looks wet but there hasn't been any clutch slipping. Anybody have any stories or suggestions on how I should tackle this? I am guessing I gotta pull the whole trans/tranny out.

Subscribed. Have the same problem myself that I need to tackle.

Yes, you'll have to drop the transmission. The seal on the front shaft is contained within a retainer plate. You should be able to remove the retainer plate and change the seal.

Is there a DIY anywhere on removing a 3-spd? Is it suggested to remove it WITH or WITHOUT the TC attached?

Mine leaks a bit as well but it's 3 on the floor. Suppose I'll have to keep track of this one too.

So I have done a little homework and besides pulling the tranny and transfer case. It looks like a fairly cut and dry procedure. There is a gasket and seal behind the inspection plate for the input shaft. What else should I replace while I am elbow deep in the truck?

If you are this far, replace the pilot bearing and throw out bearing. You might take a look at the clutch material. Your main seal could be replaced if it leaks.

The other transmissions seals and transfer seals are relatively straight forward also that way you're assured you don't have to do it again soon.

Agreed. I think I'll just borrow the neighbor's trans jack.

Yeah get jack.... That tranny and X case together is about 200 + pounds or 91 kgs. I muscled mine out coz no jack and no one anywhere had one. I used a home made A frame mounted over the tranny hole and a block and tackle to put it back. GET A JACK haa haa. I won't do that again.:bang:

I guess I could do that if worse comes to worse. I've already got the block and tackle mounted into the ceiling of my garage as a hard top hoist.

Actually to me the A frame was much safer and easier to handle. I just wish I could have found a chain jack or come-a-long but block and tackle was all I could find. But minimum muscling just lining up the shafts and throw out bearing really.
