Being able to track the ham bands on FRMS in one unit is appealing.

If someone is into Family Radio Service (FRS) and/or General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), one option would be a GMRS handheld radio with the ability to receive (Rx) only the 2m (VHF) and/or 70cm (UHF) amateur radio bands .

See:

BTECH GMRS-V1 Review

BTECH GMRS-V1 GMRS Handheld Radio + VHF/UHF Analog Scanner
  • 2W- or 500mW- transmit power
  • Receive Only: FM: 87.5-108 MHz, VHF: 136-174 MHz, UHF: 400-520 MHz

BAOFENG UV-82 BATTERY ELIMINATOR

Another option is a GMRS mobile radio with the ability to receive (Rx) only 2m (VHF) and/or 70 cm (UHF) amateur radio bands.

Cody / Cole,

I'm pretty stoked about LCDC and meeting everyone. How kid friendly is this? I have a 5 & 7 yr. I will use my own judgement on trails. Mainly asking to determine if they should come, stay home, or just hang out with my wife at an Air BnB. Anyone in a similar situation?

Cody and Cole have made it pretty kid friendly. My kids are 14, 12, and 8 this year. We've been the last 3 years and they've come along on the trails, to the dinners, etc. My daughter helped spot my on Black Bear Pass two years ago. Others have kids as well and the kids all tend to run around together at the Wednesday or Saturday evening gatherings, especially if they get bored of being around the adults (though it sounds like those may not happen this year).

That said it'll depend on who you are with when you go on the trails and how patient your kids are, of course. I recommend when you pick trails trying to find others who are looking at similar "adventure styles" - not necessarily that others have kids (though it can be nice if someone else does), but some folks are all about wheeling the hardest trails and hitting as many as possible with the fewest stops while others like to take is slow, make lots of stops, etc. (We tend to be the latter since I like to take photos, so if that's your speed join us for at least one of your days).

As far as comms go, I have had good luck with my Icom 5100 and my unlicensed buddy on a Baofeng. He transmits on FRS and listens on HAM, while I transmit on HAM and listen to him on FRS. Both radios can listen on two frequencies at once, so it works and keeps us legal. I do turn down the power for the FRS frequencies on the BF, so I can't hear him at distance of more than 1 mile, but he can always hear me. I think anyone with a higher-end mobile HAM may have repeater mode that might be able to repeat the FRS transmission on the HAM frequency, but not sure if that is technically possible (without mods) or legal, but seems like it could work too. I'll have to play around with it on my 5100.

Folks, I won't be making it this year. I just can't take the risks involved in travel at this time. I hope to see all of you at a future LCDC, hopefully with COVID-19 behind us.

Excited to share 2 new sponsors this year.. please welcome Ed Martin Toyota who has become a forum favorite and really supports the 200 platform like no other Toyota dealership. @Eric Sarjeant will be attending as well. Also pleased to have RedArc join us for the first time. They are huge Toyota fans and have some great products for the Land Cruiser.

It's a handheld, no mount needed. If your talking about an antenna mount, its HAM so you should get 3-5 miles with the little stubby antenna

The cupholder works for me as a place to put it

Sounds good. Just thought someone might have stumbled onto a solution along the lines of some of the phone mount hacks posted here. Besides, when traveling with my girlfriend the cup holders are already over flowing with “non-beverage holding “ crap:bang:

They do have mounts for them. Have a guy in our club with a mount that attaches to one of the AC vents for a T4R, not sure if its only for 4runner or generic though... You could also look at Rugged Radio mounts as their handheld is identical to a Baofeng.
Here's one off Amazon: Baofeng Handheld Mount

Has anyone decided to cancel that has reservations at Ansel Watrous? We would like a spot there to be near some of the others if possible but it's booked up. Alternatively, has another location also got some traction with our group for camping I should check dates on?

Has anyone found a good mount for this unit? The Baofeng I mean .

I like to use Nite Ize Steelie mounts (Amazon product ASIN B00BAQKRHY) for things like small radios and radio mics. The small handhelds are so light they work great with a Steelie (or knockoff - I won't judge), and the best part is you can use one mount on the dash for multiple devices as long as you have extra stick on metal/magnet pieces. You can see the Nite Ize in this pic in my last truck, and it blends in so well no one even notices it. You can also see the little patch of velcro on the side of the center console where I stick the CB for the couple times a year I'm in a group where they use it. I have a compact Midland 1001LWX that lives in the glovebox and magnet mount antenna ready to go when they're needed.

I personally don't like mounts that clip to vents because it blocks air flow and increases the likelihood the vent will get damaged. That's one of those pieces that would likely be a total PITA and expensive to replace if broken, or it could be super cheap and easy. Who knows - I just prefer to avoid it altogether and I've used Nite Ize in multiple trucks and been happy each time.

Another great tip, thanks! Time to do a little Amazon browsing. Appreciate the input all, thanks!

FWIW- I connected mine to an external antenna and bought the hand mic. The radio- just zip tied it to the E-Brake handle.

You can still use the brake and it just sits there horizontal with easy access to change channel and you use the hand mic to hear and transmit from.

Squawking inside cab with long antenna works but not as well as external antenna.
