Personally would not want 20" rims on a trail. Airing down provides a cushion and better traction, but it needs some tread and sidewall to do that

I use AT tires all over Colorado and Utah and I run them 100% of the time. My Toyo AT's are long lasting, quiet and well behaved on both highway and off road. Tires are a personal preference item. I love my Toyo's and you will get the same view from BFG or NT or Yokahama or other tire owners

There are some trails you could run with street tires like Pole hill or ones that have some rocky parts like Coney Flats.

Tires and trails... I'm not familiar with the trails Cody has in mind, but here's my dilemma:

I've got two sets of wheels for my LX 570, TRD Rock Warriors and OEM 20"...and both really need new tires for a long trip and rough roads. Running on older Michelin Latitudes on the OEMs now, as the KO2 are so out of balance on the RWs.

With the exception of this trip, 95% of my travel is highways, gravel roads and a few rough roads in Big Bend NP during the year.

I had a good feel for the trails out of Silverton/Ouray last year, since they are so well known. Just no sense of whether this year's will be similar, as scenic, as rough?

The OEM wheels are perfect for street use, so the question is how aggressive a tire would I need for the tentative trail list and are they doable with 20" wheels.
Guessing a Defender LTX isn't going to cut it...if it rains? ;)

I've got a good spare KO2 under the truck on the RW Warrior wheel and it will probably stay. I may end up just doing Coopers or something similar on the RWs, based on recommendations from the various tire threads, but figured I'd throw the question out here.

Thanks...

Edit:
ICould have saved a lot of dictation fiddling by reading @Romer ‘s response... ;)

Rock warriors at 17 give sidewall spread and space from rims when aired down to a degree 20’s can’t touch at the same tire height. Leeway to avoid pinch cuts and dimensions to create spread allows jaggy rocks absorb without damage—and offer passengers a far more comfortable ride. You can do 20’s, but you are giving up a lot of this leeway. Any decent AT will do, but I’m becoming a fan of ridge grapplers in E range for their extremely tough sidewall, great air down spread and compliant, quiet ride on-road. Great performance in anything but ice. not a dedicated mudder of course, but no AT is.

Seeing that basically all events are cancelled, I’m assuming the responsible route has been taken, and LCDC is cancelled or postponed for 2020...?
I’m not understanding your comment of “responsible route”? Are you saying if the event goes forward we are being irresponsible? Colorado is basically fully open with restaurants, gyms, campgrounds etc. if the state is open why can’t our event be? For everyone else I’m fairly confident the event will take place unless something major happens. 👍

Highly recommend AT tires for any off road trails in CO or in general.

Thanks Cody!

This is a voluntary activity. If you signed up and don't feel comfortable attending, don't come. For those who have weighed options and any potential risks and decide to go, my family is looking forward to seeing you again or meeting you for the first time. I for one could really use some fresh mountain air and sunlight after being cooped inside up for a while.

Now the route planning, and "whats open, what's not" begins. Looks like the Cosmosphere in Kansas is open, so thats still on my route.

I suppose I’m basing my question on recent science and statistics that clearly shows the number of Covid cases continues to rise. States started opening, and are now pausing or dealing with higher and higher numbers of cases. I guess my mindset is that if I were running an event, I would not want to take responsibility for bringing a large group of people together with the known risks.

We can talk all day about statistics, the relationship between increased testing and increased number of cases, delays between testing and reporting, the ballooning calculated numbers of asymptomatic cases, the continued lowering of calculated death rates, median ages of hospitalized and dying patients, direct correlation of prior underlying conditions to hospitalizations, relative risks of spread from staying at home vs outdoor activities, and many other things, and probably get nowhere. There is nothing irresponsible about an informed and well-considered decision (even if not everyone agrees with it), which the organizers are making. Again, if you don't feel good about going, don't go. And you are under no obligation to bring any group of people together for any reason, so if you don't want to plan something like this because of your perceived risk, don't. But don't presume you know better or have a more thorough understanding of the issues than those who have the same information at their fingertips and decide to go, or the event planners who--after much deliberation, research and thought--are following all relevant laws, regulations and guidelines and allowing people the opportunity to get outdoors and stretch their legs in their own vehicles. Be comfortable and happy with your decision--no one will fault you for not going; the organizers and those of us who decide to attend will be happy and comfortable with ours, and we just ask the same courtesy.

We are all responsible adults in charge of our own cautionary choices.

For those who are not adults...they are under the care and guidance of their parents.

So...
Our leaders can decide—but whatever they decide, I’ll be looking to meet up with some wheeling friends come late July.

Colorado is still looking good. Please wear a mask when in a store. If you are outside and away from others, don't worry about it. We can keep this from turning into something bad if we all work together.

Cody / Cole,

I'm pretty stoked about LCDC and meeting everyone. How kid friendly is this? I have a 5 & 7 yr. I will use my own judgement on trails. Mainly asking to determine if they should come, stay home, or just hang out with my wife at an Air BnB. Anyone in a similar situation?

It's very kid friendly. Lots of kids running around. We have 5 and 7 year olds too who will be coming, along with our two dogs. Fun for the whole family.

I'm bringing my 9 yr. daughter and dog. Hope to see lots of kids. This will exclude me from evening bar crawls, but I hope the family groups can meet up around the camp fire.

Speaking of camp fire...

These fire restrictions look a bit silly. If these are being enforced, I'm not sure how they expect those who are camping to cook a meal. Anyone know how these are being handled?

EDIT: I just found another document that says you can use the existing fire pit. Changed the link.

I'd like to think in terms of 'risky' this is pretty low...you're in your own vehicle outdoors, you can keep your distance if you're camping around others- unless someone hasn't clued me into the part where we all sit in an airtight tent inches from each other...I think it'll be pretty easy to keep whatever distance you're comfortable with.

Lots of kids attend, and they have a great time.
-Always a group-sized stash of chocolate milks in my fridge, and usually a stash of ice cream bars too.... so stop by with or without the kiddos or pester the wife for fridge access. :)
