Symptoms:
  • Handbrake Lever button difficult to press at home position
  • Handbrake lever does not make clicking noise when lifting handbrake lever
  • Handbrake does not lock when lifting
  • Handbrake stops car if you keep the handbrake lever up (engaged)
To Do:

See Pictures provided for more details
  • Remove cupholders by pulling straight up
  • Remove plastic section around handbrake lever by using a trim removal tool and lifting at the cool box location. Plastic will come when you pull up.
  • Unzip the leather handbrake cover
  • Remove the plastic/leather cover from handbrake to expose mechanism
  • Lift handbrake lever and place paper towels/shop towels at bottom location where the black handbrake switch is located to protect it.
  • Use WD40 or any other lubricant and spray inside handbrake lever mechanism while pressing the handbrake button until the button loosens and you are able to press it without any challenges. There are multiple places where you can spray inside the metal mechanism. Point the spray down since the button release mechanism is located at the bottom section of the lever.
  • Move handbrake lever up and down multiple times until you start hearing the click noise when you are moving the lever up.
  • Clean-up as much as possible and re-assembled once the normal handbrake operation is achieved.
  • If you are able to add grease to the handbrake lever pivot sections, do so. I did not.

Note: My handbrake did not require any adjustments to stop the car, but you can make minor adjust the cables connected to your car rear brakes by adjusting the nut located under the cup holder if you handbrake lever feels loose.
