So I am intent on having a working OEM ammeter but also not running full alternator charging through the cluster for safety reasons.

These threads have been informative...
Gauges and clusters
1 wire weird that

I have this shunt from Blue Sea...

And I see ammeters for later FJ40s and 60s for sale. I believe these used an external shunt and not full current to the gauge cluster...

Can anyone confirm if 79+ FJ40s and 60s ammeters used an external shunt? And if so any specifics? Anyone swap a later ammeter into their earlier (1974 in my case) gauge cluster?

Thanks!

Did you go through with this? I am considering the same for my 9/71.

Yes they used an external shunt. They actually used the fusible link as the shunt.

You need to read this thread for a better understanding of how the later Amp Meter system works. Post #74 is the beginning of the Amp Meter stuff.

I have the Blue Seas shunt shown above but I have it hooked to a Blue Sea Amp Meter, not the Toyota meter. I don't think that shunt will work with the OEM 50-0-50 meter.
