biggest difference is probably the weight of the two trucks.

I never quite understand the brand loyalty bull**** you see in those arguments. Rover guy says toyota sucks, and vice versa.

It's just a hunk of metal, that someone got brutally overcharged for at some point.

Why the blind loyalty to a company that's proved is doesn't give a s*** about it's customers?

Anyways, I'm building a combo of both. toy diesels and drive train kick ass, but I am sick to death of the rusty garbage bodywork.

What a pyle of crap, equal is equal.

Lock the lockers to compete with the traction control.

We had a 110 at the shop and looked it over very well, it was fitted with 60 series axles and a 3B.

the LR was at an unfair advantage in the first hill climb, being that traction control is a traction aid, where the LC had open diffs at first, then when they locked the diffs the LC didnt spin a tire... now make that hill a bit steeper and you will find that the LC with lockers will crawl right up the hill whereas the LR with traction control will have to use speed, winch or the LandCruisers assistance to make it up the hill
it is an interesting comparison though

I had 1966 series II SWB, a 65 109 LWB, and 1970 Land Rover Lightweight. All competent trucks with very common weak points. Then I got my first BJ70.

There is no comparison on build quality and maintenance quality. I switched to Toyota after considering a Discovery and found that there was a class action lawsuit in the US on build quality.

To me there's no comparison. If its about capability, we all build them to what we need them to be anyways.

Cheers,

john

i was surprised with the body roll comment on the Rover on the road...
not surprised with the open idff results

all in all a fair test, low rpms, crawling along... both seemed like capable drivers.

comments about build from the manufacturers was fair.

i know little about the "traction control" on a rover, is that limited slip? selectable locker? viscus coupling?...

i did notice they let the Rover spin a bit more than the Cruiser on the one climb before it grabbed.

i love the look of the old Rovers but the rarety of parts, the Lucas wiring turned me off...

I'm pretty sure the traction control is set up to brake any individual tire that is slipping ( spinning ) when it is on. At least thats how it was on my Disco II... correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any of the newer Land Rovers are available with factory lockers? All I can say as a previous Land Rover owner is the service is s***... now, I am biased because I am a die hard TOYOTA guy... but check this out... I seriously found that unless you come clad with suit and tie they could care less... I had a high pressure line go on me, a supply line for the ACE system ( active cornering enhancement ). I waited a week for the part, got the part, tore the old one out, found out they sent me the wrong part - waited another full week, picked up the right part and installed it. They then explained how I needed them to fill and pressurize the system, special fluid, etc. So I had it towed to Land Rover Calgary, they then called a few days later to tell me I had another leaky fitting ( which must have happened during the tow ride because I had the whole engine SPOTLESS degreased, cleaned etc. to find the 1st leak ) . So okay, go ahead and fix it. Any guesses on how long my truck was at their shop?? 32 DAYS!! They couldn't get the part!! LAND ROVER COULDNT GET LAND ROVER PARTS!!! Then they called about half way during its " down time stay at the LR Hotel " to tell me they wanted me to pay them to store my truck!!! I TOLD THEM TO GET STUFFED ( after it was all done and I was broke ) - all this for a broken hyd. line and a leaky fitting. BEST THING I EVER DID WAS GET RID OF THE LAND ROVER!!! I've owned 3 Cruiser since.

correction, the DEFENDER may be available with selectable lockers... I think?

similar to the H1 traction control then...okay...

not a big fan of something that takes torque away from the wheel but SEEMS to work okay.

i have heard the Disco II is a POS and yes, the Roverheads i have met over the last 3 decades have been...unique. Maybe that is why the dealerships treat them like they do.

my feelings is, if i have the coin to drop, then treat me the same as the "suit" that walks in the door...but if you don't want my money then that is fine by me, i will shop elsewhere. i found the same attitude with my wifes BMW dealer, arrogant, 'look down my nose at you' twit..

cheers and thanks for the explaination

The Range Rover comes with Centre diff lock and rear locker as standard, the LR3 and RRS come with CDL standard and rear locker as an ($500) option. They all have low-range and 'terrain-response'.

The Defender only has a centre diff-lock and low-range as standard, along with traction control in the new ones. There is no factory option for front or rear lockers but ARB, TJM, Maxi-drive etc all make after-market versions.

That is how I understand it although the dual cab Defender does not have the traction control as an option.

Ive been out with the older landrovers(93 model) and their 4wd set up is no better than a 75 series part time 4wd and open diffs.
The Defender Wagon id $49900 and the VDJ76 is about $58000 in oz but I would happily pay the extra $9K

Yeah Crushers, I guess money tastes different from "suits" than it does us blue collar guys... myself I'll take it from anyone!! As soon as you say you want parts they turn up their nose - they don't really need to sell parts, they want you to leave it with them for a month so THEY can do it for you. The suit will just say " something is wrong, can you fix it and heres the gold card number "... they dont realize some of us may have platinum cards! From past experience with a 40 series, 2 70 series and now an 80 as well, I can honestly say working on and maintaining a TOYOTA is a pleasure compared to others, esp. Land Rover. POS is right. I'm sticking with TOYOTA...

In defence of LR,its obvious a lot of problems stem from bad dealers. Ive seen a couple of forums for owners of LRs to vent their anger and most of the problems are dealer related and seem to be much worse in some countries .
English and Australian owners seem to have less complaints than some other countries.
If a dealer takes responsibilty straight up and fixes the problems 1st time ,most owners can handle a few defects.

Well I've never set foot in a rover dealer, and don't really ever intend to. I have set foot in a few toyota dealerships, and generally come away feeling either pissed off or ripped off.

So, now unless there is absolutely no other choice I won't go to the dealer. So I don't know that comparing dealers as a way to compare trucks is all that useful.

As for the trucks themselves, I'm in the same boat as crushers up there, kinda like the way the old rovers look

( tho I was actually very surprized how easy and cheap parts are to get for them...not that I'm ever going to buy any:lol: )

But my god are they s***ty and horrible to work on. which is why I took a torch to cut out every single thing LR other than the bodywork and dragged it out to the street corner.
Didn't even get out the socket set, just the torch. :hillbilly:

The body work though, is refreshingly easy to work on after ten years of rusty ass cruisers, the rocker panel took about 2 hours to replace with a section of 2x3, and a few more minutes to add sliders. And it looks like it's meant to be there.

I've been putting off doing the rocker on my bj70 for months because it's going to be such a pain in the ass.

In this part of the world an aluminum body is a bit of a plus.

Kinda funny but one of the best comparisons I've noticed so far, is the typical owners of cruisers vs rovers...

A cruiser guy comes to your house to get parts , and he generally shows up with a huge toolbox , possibly a torch , grubby clothes ,quite likely some beer, and is ready to take a whole truck apart to get the part he wants.

A rover guy shows up, chances are he'll have a couple of miss-matched sockets, a crescent wrench and a screwdriver.

But yeah, if I had enough money to buy a new truck, I don't think I'd consider a rover for a second.

cheers,
r

Land Rover is owned by ford now isn't it? They always seemed like such a she she poo poo truck.... Of course I have seen some old defenders still in action, funny tho there aluminum bodies don't seem to be in the best shape.... I really don't think anything compares to a well maintained cruiser and if you live in a part of the world that you're exposed to salt you have to do the preventive maintence to stop the rust aluminum body or not... and in my opinion traction control can't be compared to a factory diff LOCK... although it maybe more on road friendly....

its pretty unfair to compare traction control vs open diffs. After all the diff locks are the cruisers traction control
