Got started with the SAS project this weekend. Josh and I were able to get a good bit done. Ran into problems with that bastard "Murphy" though, so we didn't get quite as far as we'd liked. But, progress was made. New front crossmember tacked in place, IFS was cut off and frame grinded, oil pan conversion done. We are ready to get started on steering box/suspension mock up. Hopefully, one night after work and then again next weekend and maybe we'll have that sucker on the ground! Wishing it would be ready for Ramble, but with the crawler adapters on backorder, I doubt it'll be ready to wheel. But, I'll be there ridin' shotgun with Josh and trying not to let Scott outdrink me too bad ;)

Good looking start fella's.
It's funny how the only pictures that show anybody working . . .
only show Josh :hmm:

What front axle are you using?
And, the steering geometry, is that gonna' be home built or aftermarket?

Keep the progress picts coming.

HA! I figured it best to leave the cutting to an expert. I didn't get any pics of me with my new grinder :)

I am using a Dana 44 out of a Wagoneer and will be using the Parts Mike steering goodies.

We are hoping to get some work in tomorrow evening, so maybe I'll have some pics of some spring/steering mock up stuff. We'll see.

My truck is done. Phase 1 anyway. Still waitin' on crawler adapters. Here are a couple of pics:

Can't wait for them adapters to come in, I am ready to go wheelin' instead of ridin'.

Nice!

Looks good. We need to get together and try it out.

Yes we do! Just as soon as I get my crawler adapters in and driveshafts built, let's go :)

Although I'm gonna' see this beast in less than month, why don't ya'll post up some pix?

Surely ya'll took some really exteme picts of Lance flexing . . . like at the Wal-Mart when he jumped the curb or something?

Progress report?

No new pics just yet. Have only really flexed the suspension with a jack in Josh's driveway. We got the crawler installed last weekend and only have a few remaining items to get done before she hits the trail. Need front driveshaft, ebrake mount modification and a couple of other odds and ends. Hope to have a shakedown cruise sometime before the Crawl. I can't wait, it has been too long since I rode some trails with her. Just hope I can drive worth a damn with all the new goodies ;)

Cant wait to see it as well. Thought your bulldogs where going to beat the hogs yesterday.

You did? Wish I'd have thought that. I think it'll be a long season for my Dawgs. First time I have ever worried about beating Ms. State.

I am probably going to the Arky/Bama game, but I don't know any of the logistics yet, just know I have a ticket.

We have been feeding our Dawgs gunpowder so it should be a good game!

Well, after some marathon nights and Saturdays, this thing has finally hit the trail! We headed down to Superlift for a few hours to test out our hard work.

The dual cases worked flawlessly, and the SAS is setup perfect.

We hit Fun Run, Don's 101, Buckhorn North, Squids, UA, Can Opener, Gorge, and Rock Fink Ravine. The only issues we had were hanging the diffs on the rocks. Lance has to learn how to drive all over again. :lmao:

We've still got some loose ends to tie up, like the wiring so the green 4WD light in the dash will come on again, and removing the stock crossmember mounting ears.

Oh, and putting the duals together with no instructions was fun. Inchworm nor Marlin seem to have good instructions for the Taco adapers.

Now on to the pictures...

Crawl box. Adapters are from Inchworm.

Update! Lance got a good deal on some 37x12.50x17 Cooper STT's. Now he's got 17" rims like all the cool kids. We also bolted on some 1" spacers to gain a little width.

He also got a new set of Warn hubs, and we installed those. Tires and hubs were installed Thursday night.

On the way home, he heard a loud noise, and it jerked to the right. Later down the road, it sounded like the driveshaft was turning. He climbed out to check the hubs and burned his fingers. Yep, the wheel bearing let go.

He limped it 3 miles home at 15-20 MPH, and we decided to tear into it this morning. Well, the carnage is an exploded outer wheel bearing, a brand new warn hub, the spindle, and the wheel hub.

The outer bearing let go, leaning the tire and the Warn hub was supporting the weight of the truck (in a way it wasn't designed to do). It striped all the splines in the hub (better than the chromo shaft). The bearing rollers "welded" the inner race to the outer race, and the outer race spun in the wheel hub, wallering it out. Also, the spindle nuts and inner race "welded" to the spindle.

After 2 hours of hammering with a chisel and punch, we finally got all the guts broke up enough we could get the hub/rotor off the spindle. One trip to the junkyard where I knew where a D44 Wagoneer was, we were back in business.

Anyways, we had plans to ride some forest service roads today, but we spent all day doing this instead.

At least I have pictures of the new tires on the truck. :D
