Hello,
Suspected my kzj 70 3.0 litre TD (78,000miles) head gasket had gone so got it tested out and my assumptions were correct. The garage also had a Hilux Surf with identical engine in and done 125,000miles. The head had cracked on this engine. I am just wondering if anyone else had encountered any problems with these engines before (1HZ i think..)
Praying it's the gasket and not the head.
Cheers,
Fred:doh:

my oh my, it seems my thoughts are correct...
i had read and heard the KZ engine has head issues...

sorry to hear...

i have yet to see a cracked 1HZ head but anything is possible...

ah well, apart from a new exhaust, this is about all that's ever needed doing on the truck in 15 years. Well if it is the gasket, hopefully a new one will hold for another 78,000!
thanks Crusher, I've just had to put my lc to bed for a week until the garage can have her in, so I've got the farm's Nissan Terrano II for a while. Just not the same! ;) oh and it was a nasty looking crack on the head btw, ouch!

not to be mean but 78,000km !!! that is all you got out of that engine?

Toyota HD LC diesels are noted for 500,000 before rebuilding. 15 years is nice but in Canada 15 years usually equals 400,000 to 600,000 km.

get a new head installed, then sell that rig and buy a PZ/HZ/HDT...

<shaking head, my beat up bush pigs get more milage out of them than that>

Only the early 1KZ had head problems. The ones in the 96-Prado are mostly trouble free.
The diesel Prado's are very hard to buy used here because owners hang onto them.
A good sign they are reliable.

yup, 78,000 isn't much really! I've added 35,000 to it in the last 3 years that I've had it. One (very) careful owner beforehand. Will rebuild it and see what's about. Vehicles over here have plummeted in value, but I don't think I'll find many 70s in as good as shape as mine, unfortunately.

please post up a thread of the rebuild... many of us have never seen the inside of a KZ (let alone the outside of one)...

curious, where is over here...

oh my, you are out there a bit, eh M8?

little bit windy? a whee bit of fog now and then i suspect...

it has been foggly lately! work on a farm and almost got lost last night in a sugar beet field- even though the harvester is covered in spot lights!

Hello! Quick update, i got the head replaced with a shiny new one. Dropped it off at our friendly mechanics and all seemed well, until i noticed a nasty rattle while revving up to about 2500rpm, and worse when cold. when cold startin the engine shakes as if its misfiring almost and diesel coming out in a bluey smoke out the back. Checkd injectors, found water in diesel filter and relaced glow plug but still doing it. Any ideas? I know its hard to diagnose through here! Oh, and got a photo of the cracked head (right between rings) to scan and get on here.

The water in the filter doesnt sound good. It may be the cause of your problems

I would be back at the mechanics, quick smart

ah and here's the cracked head!

Hi,
Getting the injectors tested tomorrow. I'm beginning to wonder whether the new head and increased pressure could have caused the big end bearings to rattle or something else to go? The rattle is worst when revving up through 2000rpm.
Any symptoms I should look for? Thanks,
Fred

The new head should only have bouught the compression up to what it should be so the BEBs would only be under normal load.
The 1KZ is indirect injection which means it has pre cups and they do rattle (and fall off).

Exhaust rattle? Bolts not tightened up after surgery? Just a thought. Where does the rattle seem to come from?

I can tell you that when I had a 2lte head crack on our Prado and replaced with new it was never quite the same as before. On start-up it would fart and smoke / miss fire idle rough for anywheres up to 20 secs depending on how cold. Never did get to the bottom of that one....I posted that quite a long time ago, not sure if others had/has the same experience. I suspect the kz is a similar beast - but never seen one in person.

Good luck and get back to the mechanic!

thanks for the replies, if things aren't sorted out with injectors, will look at the other possibilities. Great looking snow plough, btw 2rivers! what a beast.

probly insignificant now but that was 78,000 miles not kms wasnt it?? bit of a difference between the two.

out of curiosity, why would anyone post in miles unless they lived in the states? the only backward country left in the world...

sorry miles it was. Don't forget us Brits are still imperialistic!! ;) And my Speedo big number is in miles...
Should I be posting in km then?
btw, still got a rattle, had it back to garage several times so going to get a 2nd mechanical opinion from our ex-farm mechanic who knows his stuff.
