Hi guys,

I’ve hit a snag in my first major mechanical undertaking of redoing my knuckles.

I’ve gotten it reassembled and am measuring the knuckle pre-load and it’s coming up low...about 4lbs.

All shims were put back as taken apart. Since I was low, I added one shim to the bottom, and now I have 0lbs pre-load...

Any advice or direction would be appreciated. Anything I’m finding on the forums deals with either high lbs, or “just going by feel and f’ it mentality”...

Some pics of what you did would help immensely on background. Pic of as is state would help also if you do not have pics of what you did.

Also there was only previously one thick and one thin shim on top, and a single thick shim on the bottom.

Have you watched the Otramm knuckle rebuild videos?

What does the back of the knuckle look like? All the felt, seals, gasket brackets in place?

I have not watched that video. Just reading everywhere I can including the FSM.

I was able to get the bearing preload in spec by removing a top thin shim.

here’s the race to my inner wheel bearing...seems pretty beat up, especially since the PO had done a full knuckle rebuild only 7-8 years prior...

I’ve had the vehicle for 4-5 years now..it seems kind of soon to need another one...

the driver side knuckle was the one leaking, and once all cleaned up looks in good shape.

my passenger side knuckle however wasn’t leaking, but had a THICK layer of grease and caked dirt over everything outside, also the ball of the knuckle is quite rusted over...
