Would anyone out there be willing to rent their knuckle centering tool for a day? I am ready for reassembly so the time I would have it would be very short. I am located in Salt Lake City

Thanks
Scott Pitcher

never seen one of those before, and no i dont have one sorry

Ok I have never heard of this tool, nor do I have any clue how to use it. Can someone explain the necessity of it and how to use it?

Joe

Do a search - tons of info about this tool and its use here on mud, including directions on making a home-built substitute utilizing a dial indicator.

The purpose of the tool is to precisely center the knuckle assembly with the axle seal seat to assure no run out of the axle shaft thru the seal. Some have theorized that using the more "flexible" axle seals from Marlin reduces the need to use this tool.

It is in the FSM manual under front axle. What you are asking for is very long winded.

It is a tool that helps you measure the amount of shims you will need for each knuckle when doing a rebuild.

I'll rent you mine- if you promise to return it and pay for shipping both ways. Shoot me a PM.

Sorry for not responding sooner, I was on a lunch break.

greytandy, you are right in your description of the tool I need.

Thanks for all of the help, I will be happy to pay for any costs incured for letting me borrow this tool. I will send some PM's out to those who have offered so we can figure out the details.

Thanks
Scott

Why not just replace the shims with the same ones that you took out? Not like the knuckle parts changed sizes on you during the rebuild.

After spending a long time jacking with the tool, I did whats lots of guys do, I bought Marlin inner seals, and put a thick and a thin on bottom and a thin on top, torqued to 72 pounds, pulled fish scale and it all worked... Don't jack with the tool... If you are just rebuilding, label all shims and put them back just like you took them out.

I have the Marlin seals, courtsey of Kurt(CruiserOutfitters) so I feel very confident with the seals.

The reason I don't use the existing sizes is that someone has been in the axle before and I don't believe they used the correct shim sizes during the rebuild. I have been in multiple axles and have first; never have I seen two of the largest shims on the bottom of the knuckle, and second; I had straight gear oil in the knuckle assembly.

I figure I don't want to do this job again, at least for a while, so I figured if I get it exact this time, and with the new Marlin seals, the axles should be in great shape for quite a while.

Same for me.....didn't use any alignment tools....most guys I had spoke to just used the same amount of shims and were more worried about the pull. One guy's point was "you gonna have that thing on the trail to align when your birf breaks?"

Your right, once I have it centered I won't need the tool again. From then on I know who centered the knuckle, so I will just replace the shims. If I knew Toyota centered this knuckle I wound't be worried at all.

Actually according to the Toyota manual, the only time the centering tool would need to be used is if a knuckle is replaced, or if an axle housing is replaced.

Thanks
Scott
