Knocked out some PM today and I'm feeling pretty good about it!

Today was a solid 8 hours for me and a buddy on the LX

Valve cover gasket OEM
Throttle body gasket OEM
Spark plug seals OEM
PHH - green stripe
All radiator hoses - Gates (I don't recommend those hoses - pretty thin and soft)
Dizzy cap OEM
Dizzy wires NGK
Rotor OEM
Spark plugs OEM
Fuel filter WIX
New coolant Prestone
Oil change Valvoline
Air filter FRAM
Pulled running boards off
Cleaned the throttle body

And swapped in a new OEM throttle cable. Man It is a different world with the new throttle cable. Like warm butter!

The truck has been sitting in the garage for months because of the leaky valve cover gasket. It feels pretty good to be ready for the several beach trips we have planned for the summer!

Anyhow, I just thought I would share!

I have been sitting on some of the parts for a while and cant remember an exact amount. I would estimate it at no more than $500 for everything. Got the parts from CruiserDan and Amazon.

Can I borrow your buddy for 8 hours ? Very productive 8 hours

Didn't really pay attention to how it looked. I just slapped it in there when I buttoned up the intake It was $17 so I doubt it is washable. It fits fine.

Productive day there! Any tips or pointers while its fresh in the brain?? Was anything a pain in the ass? I've never done a tune-up but am planning on doing pretty much the same job in a month or two.

That heater hose is gonna be fun. Everything else is pretty straight forward.

I'm too lazy to search - how easy was it to replace the throttle cable? Mine is sticky and I've thought about replacing it so I'm curious...

You made or saved about $1K in labor that day!
The way you work you can do the dizzy, crank, and oil pump seals in one day.
I have done the same projects, but over a much longer time.
I'm lucky to get one thing done a night.

The Cable is pretty easy to replace but getting to the 2 bolts is awkward. I have considered wrapping mine with heat tape as it likely would not hurt.

Pics please! Great work getting the rig in beach shape. I'm about to tackle putting in a new radiator and water pump, and repacking the rear wheel bearings.

In my line of work a PM is a Project Manager. The thread title had a totally different meaning for me..
:lol: :lol: :lol:

About how much time do you think for the VC gasket, injector rings and TB gasket? These parts have been kicking around my garage for over a year :eek:

@Heckraiser
Dont know about the injector rings, but you can knock out the valve cover gasket and throttle body seal in an hour if you know what you are doing. Call it 2.5 hours if your learning. That piece took about 90 minutes, but I cleaned the valve cover and throttle body pretty good while it was out and that took some time.

@IronCladLou
The throttle cable is cake. The 2 mounting screws are in a tight spot above the pedals, but it was a 10-15 minute job soup to nuts for us. The cable feeds from inside the cabin through the firewall.

@Hornd
The dizzy, oil pump cover, and crank pulley seals are a 2.5 hour job start to finish if you have done it before. I have done 3 of them now and getting pretty efficient with it.

@Shoredreamer
Tips:

Dont bother trying to loosen the hose clamps on the PHH. Just use a decent pair of snips that will chew through a hose clamp and replace them. It uses some kind of cotter pin clamp that I have only seen on the PHH. just cut that sucker off. Pull the driver wheel and fender skirts and access it from there.

Fuel Filter - disconnect the gas lines BEFORE you remove the fuel filter

Fuel Filter - notch the hole on the "passenger side" of the fuel filter mount. It is damn near impossible to feed the bolt up through the mounting hole in the filter. so turn the O shaped hole on the right side of the filter into a C shape so you can get the bolt started and then slide the fuel filter into it and tighten.

Air Filter - Be careful when pulling the intake plumbing that runs from the air filter to the throttle body. Its old and a little a little fragile.

Valve Cover - be careful with the fragile heater hoses on the firewall above the valve cover. they are old and somewhat brittle. Dont go knocking them around when pulling/installing the valve cover.

Spark Plugs - Its a lot easier to knock out spark plugs (especially the rear one) while the valve cover is off. They need to be gapped to .031

CLEAN YOUR THROTTLE BODY! Its gross in there. Use a toothbrush, some kind of pick/scraper for the hard stuff, throttle body cleaner

You use pipe cleaners or what, to clean the tiny ports in Intake?

Just clean both sides of the throttle plate. I didnt remove the entire intake.. just the throttle body because it is directly above the valve cover.

My bad, brain fart, I meant the spark plug rings. :eek:

@Heckraiser
Tack on an extra 5-10 minutes to clean the old spark plug seals out and pop the new one in. The old seals were pretty stubborn and none of them came out in 1 piece.
