Got home from the store last night and the key won't come out of the ignition. I rotates past the off position but i am not sure if it goes as far as it should. Any ideas? I was considering some type of lube but i don't want to do any damage. This is on my 98 LX470

Any else had this happen ?

TIA

TLC Dan

is it free turning in the cylinder?

You do know about the push in and turn CCW at the ACC position right?

Loud,

All functions of the ignition work correctly including starting. Yes i have been pushing in and turning CCW to extract the key. It 's almost like the key doesn't trun enough CCW to release the key. When my wife gets home with the GS400 i will compare how far the key rotates and advise

Thanks

WooHoo

Trunk Monkey gets the prize. It wasn't quite all the way clicked in park.

Thanks Guys

It was in the garage:rolleyes:

They make key carbon. You rub/sprinkle it on the key before you insert in the hole. Works great. I live on SF bay (Floating home) and the salt water gets to the front door lock every year or so. Try it. Works like butter, and costs maybe $3.00

Jiggle the shifter. Every now and then when I put our truck in park it won't seat to the "click" that releases the key.
The other thing that sometimes happens is you can't turn the key when you put it in the ignition, the solution is to crank the wheel as far left as you can. Somehow it releases the steering wheel lock mechanism

The shift lever position and the Park/neutral position can be adjusted underneath the truck.

In my 98 FSM it doesn't have it's own heading but is covered in the AT diagnostics section DI-158.

Same thing is starting to happen to me now.

Could it be a worn out key or ignition.

All functions work as they should except when you try to pull the key out after the truck is in park. Some times I have to push in and wiggle key back and forth to get it out.

Is it me or are we starting to see more key issues with 98 99 LCs and LXs? I don't mean a FOB key broke either, I mean tumbler or door tumbler issues that bind, lock up the key.

what preventive maintenance can be done? what is the powder discussed above?

Agreed I think we are. It would be nice to know if there is some preventive maintenance that can be done to prevent this. I think I will start saving my pennies if indeed it is the ignition.

Same here...saving pennies.

my ingnition has locked up twice recently where it felt like I needed to turn the steering wheel to release it but that didn't work....carefully pulling the key out a small small bit, millimeters and it felt as if the key grooves lined up with the tumbler. I am at 206k so not sure if my key is worn out or tumbler or both......definitely something to start watching for.

Inox MX3 is an excellent lock lube, it's not solvent based like WD etc, its one of the few lock lube and preservatives recommended for use by high end lock manufactures that supply to Defense. Graphite powder products shouldn't be introduced into locks that have any oil/grease residue as they will eventually gunk up and cause binding. So, as far as ignition lock PM goes, an occasional squirt of Inox will help prolong the locks' useful life.

Had to laugh, just greased the drive lines and was unable to get it out of park. After using the override button the key would not release from my ignition. Was about to start disassembling the console in search of the issue but simple jiggle of the shifter released it. Nice!!!

Im wondering if the fact of me greasing the driveline with all 4 wheels on the ground vs off the ground caused something to bind up.

I used Houdini lock lube on the ignition and smoothed things out a bit.
