PHH
ALL the vac hoses under the upper intake
Make a decision on rear heater delete or now - now is the time if you prefer
Unplug the harness from behind the glove box and pull it out through the firewall, then you can do the HG repair in the truck if you want
Watch the OTRAMM YouTube vids on the HG repair ... super helpful
Replace every hose you want to, can't hurt
Thermostat for sure, radiator wouldn't hurt either if it's original
ALL the gaskets on the front of the engine
If the truck has any power steering whine, no better time to do the steering pump
Exhaust manifold to downpipe gaskets
Install a home made or simple catch can

i hate to keep the lift locked down to one project and dropping it on a trailer and moving it is a real pain.

You might need another lift :meh: I only have 1 to use

well, since my wife commandeered the red one, a black one followed me home Wednesday. 1996, locked, some rust (was in Minnesota at some point)

How big is your lift? I'm assuming that a 2 ton is not enough if you're pulling the engine and tranny AND your lift arm is overextended?

man you dont even want to know the redneck stuff we do in that shop. pulled one last week the same way with the same hoist. just used the hoist to hold up the back while the tractor held the front so we could get some axles out. i mean yeah we had jackstands involved but they are the HF so who knows how much to trust them.

I picked up a parts truck today for our 2 80s - I'm using the frame under the black truck, but the body is available if anyone has rolled theirs and needs a rust-free replacement (comes with rear doors, not pictured). I'm near Charlotte, NC

quick, but inconsequential update: I put awesome cloth non-power '93 seats in the '95 (love them!) and started replacing all the UCA, LCA, and R arm bushings - I had the distinct pleasure of re-orienting the UCA bolts in the wrong direction to clear the coil springs this evening (it's the little things, right?)

And more work on the Brick (the faded red '95) today, since we are taking it to the mountains for the weekend: finished up the radius arm bushings, replaced the master cylinder and bled 4 cans through the system to get clear, airless fluid at all 5 nipples (still have the s***ty squishy pedal - it HAS to be air trapped in the ABS pump manifold, right?), and pulled both driveshafts to replace the 3 universal joints that were still present. This stuff on top of the seat swap, driver's door panel repair, driver's door handle replacement (apparently I got the last red handle in the US), and visor swap.

Can you believe the Brick is the nicer of the two 80s? (the other one is crusty.)

I'll button up the driveshafts early tomorrow morning, then we're off for the weekend, brakes be damned.

so I forgot to update this thread when my wife pulled into the driveway overheating (link here)
- turns out this truck is charmed; the underpaid mechanic that did the headgasket job neglected to slide the two factory clamps back onto the hoses at the nipples of the heater core. (took quite a while for them to start releasing steam under pressure - like 2 years?) Got lucky; no damage.

I put a scangauge2 in, as recommended, to see what the actual temps are, and saw temps between 178-190 on the mountain trips for the next two consecutive weekends. (about 800 miles, total) - I'm calling that fixed.

and today I finished some really deferred maintenance on the Brick.

  • Finally fixed the power steering leak (the supply hose from the reservoir wore a thin spot against another hose and wept under pressure (like most of us). Both were replaced.
  • Changed the oil (finally, after the overheating incident)
  • Tightened VERY loose front wheel bearings (got lucky - looked like everything was more or less recently serviced, but had loosened - hence my bookmarking threads today)
  • Installed Dobinson C59-220v/223v coils and IMS shocks (keeping my slinky kit for the black 80)
  • Panhard correction
  • SCS Ray10s with 315 Patagonias - had to go through 5 Patagonias to get 4 that would balance; looks like quality has gone down between the first set I ordered a couple of years ago and the recent ones I've received. :/

Still need to do the alignment (in the morning) - then off to the mountains again!

I'm going to leave the caster uncorrected for this first trip, to get a sense of driving it before/after. - Then the RAMs get welded on in a week or so.

Love the color and wheel combo!

- and now I have a 2000RPM high idle and the A/T Temp light came on as I was leaving town. nuts.

(quick throttle cable adjustment seems to have corrected the idle - going to give it another shot, hoping the high idle was overheating the transmission around town...)

ooh, longtime, no posting!

I'm putting an ARB deluxe on the Brick for Julia - what's the current winch choice for these? - plus I'm guessing I need to swap the front springs out for the weight... maybe c59-222v?

oh, I'm going to have to go back into some spreadsheets for that - it's been a minute.
Glad I'm not the only one with spreadsheets
