K02 Tire blew up causing body damage ... need a wheel for a 2004 Land Cruiser ...

A 10 ply tire should not be driven below 40 PSI. The 10 plies will crack when it is driven like a 4 or 6 ply tire 30-35 PSI). I have 10 ply tires and I keep 39-40 psi at all times.

Also a Youtuber (roamingreckless) also reports a KO2 busting on highway.

I know you said 3 year old tire but what is the date code? (On the other tires of the batch, if this one is unreadable)

Wow. I had a KO2 blowout on my 100 three weeks ago going 70ish on a highway. It didn’t explode like yours though and I had no other damage. Pulled over quickly and changed it out. I had Discount Tire check my wheel and had no damage on it either. But the tires were 4 years old with about 60k on them. Just put on a set of KO3s

Calling BS on this

DOT shows 16th week of 2021.
We purchased them on June 7, 2021

The remaining 3 tires look like this:

Glad it happened at t lower speed and no injuries to anyone!

This looks like the tire had sidewall damage and disintegrated. The damage possibly due to running on low pressure for too long or high speed. It may had the damage done previous trip. Low pressure on highway speed structurally damages sidewalls quicker than one can think of.

I don't feel like 32psi is low enough to have been the cause of this. I run mine at 38 and it's perfect. Tread wear is 100% even and I get 40-50k out of a set. 6psi delta sounds really small to be the difference between ideal tire performance and violent explosion.

I don’t off road much. Just muddy/stoney job sites and some heavy snowy travels north in the winter. I switched to defenders after wild peaks, the defenders work just as well everywhere and much smoother.
Which are you considering if you don't mind me asking?

Depending on the load. OP seems ok in photos because no aftermarket steel.
But, 32psi is on the lower end. Probably too low for a camping trip on a highway. Or even without a load on a cold day.

From the comments I read, I increased the Tire Pressure in the K02's to 38psi.

I've been running 33 psi on Falken Wildpeaks when on pavement. 65k on my first set with zero issues, even wear and a comfy ride (as comfy as you can get with 10 ply). Normally run about 18 psi off road. Those tires probably had another 10k miles of life, but the sidewalls were pretty torn up from trails and I replaced them early before another offroad trip. Load range E tires require less pressure to carry the same load as P rated tires, but of course there is a limit for handling and a point where too much deflection at speed will cause heating at tread separation.

Fair, but I'd expect similar out of the other 3 tires on the same vehicle if the air pressure was a big factor. At least on the same end f/r as the failed tire.

I would suspect this was a factory flawed tire or one that had unnoticed damage.

Any pictures of the interior of the tire, specifically where the shoulder is still intact?

👆 Check before taking that back to road.
Also, only that tire may had the damage previously running on low.

I'm running 45, mine is loaded with armor. 40 is ok too to my eye. But compressed with camping/road trip gear. Bumping it up and down is too much to handle for me

I run my KO2s at 45/47 front/rear psi, I have armor but most is aluminum and the 2nd and 3rd row seats are not installed. My first set lasted about 50k. The tires are rated for 65psi, so no worry about over inflation.

There was much discussion about what PSI to use for oversized tires.

Really? let us know your reasoning.
If not, please rectify your statement.
Thanks!

The .. “must be 40 or higher” is just too broad of a statement IMO based on personal experiences. Have run multiple sets at 35 ish up through the mile warranties with no problems.

But .. meh you do you

Thanks!

That is the experience, but scientifically, at low pressures the plies will rub one another (relative motion between plies) wearing the plies making it weak and eventually burst open. This won't happen to a tire with low number of plies. Any tire with 10 or more plies should run no lower than 40 PSI, this ensures all plies act like a thick wall and one unit. I do have 10 plies and first set in my life.. I hate 40 PSI but got to live with it until I switch back to 6 ply LT tires. Thanks for sharing your experience.
