Hi just thought I would let everyone know I got my new 1989 hilux double cab. Flew out to vancouver, took a cab to the shipping yard, signed some papers, and went to start the truck and no go. GO t a boost and truck ran like a top. Instaled an aluminum tray in mission, and drove the rest of the way back no problems. accept got pulled over in terrace bay ont. the Officer knew what the truck was and was a cruiser fanatic. seems like he pulled me over to talk about the truck.
going for cetification today.
will post some pics soon.

Oh, had some old plates with recent sticker, and just went to the insurance office bofore I flew out. got insurance and at least would have that to show if I got pulled over. so didn't deal with temp permits at all, and no problems, even the officer said the plates wer not the problem, it was that i was speeding, he wanted to see insurance bill of sale, and license.

Congrats -- on the truck.
Get those PICs up so we can all have a look..

Cheers and good luck with the inspection.

Congratulations...those double cabs are sweet. I must say, you've got some guts to drive across the country like that in a vehicle that is basically an unknown quantity. My advice would be to do all the fluids - transfer case, diffs, engine oil, etc. ASAP. The stuff that came out of my truck was pretty grungy.

Looking forward to pics.

I had a lot of work done on the truck before it left japan, labour is cheaper there and so are tires.
I had the front rotors replace and new calipers put on, and shoes, and the front bearings and hubs repacked and preloaded. and new exhaust, and all fluids changed, including brake, clutch powersteering airconditioning, and diffs, and transmision, tranfsfercase, etc with synthetic oil. had new timing belt and waterpump. and other belts. engine looked brand new.
had 67k km. but now has 71k km. so had a good feeling with new fluids before I left. was dissapointed when the truck would not start but the guys at the port said none of the vehicles that come over start without a boost.
had no problems after that.
accept the speed warning alarm was a little anoying, and only am radio.
was in for certification today and etesting. the truck passed etesting but failed saftey at toyota dealership in Barrie ont. They said truck needs rear bumper to pass saftey. everything else was ok though.
so after instaling trailer hitch and welding up bumper I will bring it in for the certificate, and can get it registered.
Found out that after seeing a right hand drive supra in the toyota dealership that I could have had them source out the hilux for me. they said they had sold a few right hand drive landcruisers that they imoprt. They also mentioned they will source out any parts I need.
good to know they are willing to help out.

mika,
will get pics up as soon as the bumper and hitch are on.

They also mentioned they will source out any parts I need.

You're lucky!! Most dealers will not even try since it's not a Toyota Canada import.

A rear bumper to pass safety? A lot of trucks (imports especially) used to have no rear bumpers when you bought them at the dealerships, it was considered an option. That was a while ago I guess, things have changed I suppose.

Jmika,
You are in Barrie?
You were at Jackson's Toyota, thats where I purchased my truck from.
I'm down here in Newmarket.:D
I've only had my truck back there once..and got no where..:frown:
Maybe things have changed a little..since May. (I'll give them the bennifit of the doubt)..:censor:
Once you go in for parts we will see if they have..:grinpimp:

Hey Louis ..
Greetings as always..

Has there been any changes in the Ontario certification standards at all??
Or do you think the inspector was trying to make a sale?

I think it is required in ontario to have a rear bumper but not front bumper to pass safety. had a temp welded up last night to pass.
Will try to get or draw up some plans for tube bumpers front and back. the front is really thin and weak. Thinking 2inch tube bumpers, trying to decide to incorporate a winch or not.
thanks
should get some pick soon, the tray wasa lowered last night and cleared up all of my blind spots and looks way better now. All I have to do is get rid of the insanely large 'OFF ROAD" stickers (factory) on either side of truck.

Try a hot air hair dryer, Carefully.
Just heat up the sticker enough to slowly pull it off. The heat makes the glue on the back of the sticker soft enough to do it..
Then clean the area up ..You may see better paint where the sticker was..

also there is a chemical spray sticker remover i have been using that works very good with no damage to the paint...
i can't remember the name at the moment...

I would really like to see some pictures of the truck with the tray installed. I am really finding the super shortbox borderline useless and think the tray would make much more sense.
Thanks

Pictures..???

thanks crushers.
When I get the stickers off and some nice tube bumpers bent and welded up I will try to post some more pics. The trays are cheaper in bc then australia. I don't know how but they are. even when built in australia.
This combo will be useful. the tray sticks out 4 inches on either side of the body of the truck so hinders wheeling a bit. thinking about getting canvas top made up for it.

Mika, got a link or contact info of where you got your tray built? here in Calgary it takes forever (if ever) to get a tray built and costs a FORTUNE.
cheers
