Hi guys. I am new to the FJ-40 world. I have owned 2 4runners, an FJ-60 but, never an 40.

I had a few questions, I tried searching, but didn't find much. I am pretty new, and I had been doing some reading here (and in the tech FAQ, etc).

Here are some pictures. On the way home, I broke the plunger of the clutch cylinder. Will a new clutch master cylinder like this one linked work for a replacement?
ALL-FOREIGN CAR PARTS - Import & Domestic Car Parts, Import & Domestic Truck Parts, Brakes, Rotors, Distrubutors

Here are some pictures of the linkage that broke, as well as the OEM master clutch cylinder, I believe on the right.

Also, I am completely ignorant in the realm of a dash-mounted transfer-case lever. Anyways, where do you think this should be mounted to? I couldn't figure it out!? The picture is looking forward on the vehicle.

Lastly, here are some pictures. Its in great shape, the stock F motor runs fairly strong. I think I'll try my hand at rebuilding the carb. I am assuming this is a stock carb?

I am getting a pretty good wobble going about 35... I am assuming the SOA conversion has something to do with that. Looks like I'll have to do some steering upgrades down the line....

Thanks for any help or direction on where to do some more research!!!

Oh and :flipoff2: in advance... !!! hehe

clutch master wont work unless you swap the slave cylinder, hose and make a new hardline. Issue is with the fact the early one you have has a larger flare fitting than the one pictured.

T-case hi lo shift rod hanging down goes to the lever arm that is on the top rh side of the t-case. you will need a clevis pin and a cotter pin to re-install.

as for the wander/wobble, check the toe in, if thats good, you may need to cut and turn the axle housing, or install caster shims to give more caster. Also, check the tie rod ends.

Where about in San Diego? I am in PB...

Thanks for the quick reply.

So are the newer style master/slave clutch cylinders something I should just swap to, or would it be okay to find an older style master cylinder? I have tried some other online vendors but cannot find a direct swap for a 66... hmm.. Any links?

Sorry for the newb questions, I'm just a little excited to get this thing running so I can just cruise it around town for the time being... Then I'll start doing more work on it this summer.

I am up in Solana Beach! Stoked to see another Sandy Eggan. ;)

I would update to all new stuff. going to be less hassle in the long run. You will need clutch master, slave, metal hardline, and hose.

Places like SOR.com have them in kit form: Specter Off-Road-Land Cruiser Parts - 018-01-KIT-Clutch Hydraulic Update Kit

CCOT does too:
Slave - Master Conv Kit

You can do it for cheaper if you order a clutch master and slave from cruiseroutfitters.com, and get a brake hose and a 24" piece of metric brake hardline from kragen. Kurt at cruiseroutfitters.com carries Aisin hydraulic parts, which are the OEM supplier to Toyota, and the same quality as toyota at a reduced price. As for the brake hose, I think I used a 76 FJ40 rear axle brake hose when I converted my 67 FJ45. I ended up using a master and slave for a 76 FJ40...

I'd recommend the SOR kit. Quality Japanese parts and everything is there. I installed one last year on my '70. You may have to bend the hard line to route it through the firewall mount.

I have no idea about these sort of things (until mine breaks- then I'll be very familiar!!)

Just want to say congrats on the purchase and welcome...:flipoff2:... Oh- one thing I do know about- I'd flip that bezel around before the hard core guys get into you for it.

Nice looking rig!
Jamie.

I have 66 also ... They have good metal and smog exempt
Mine was hacked up when I got it so updated the running gear
and other things... Good luck with your project

Looks like you have a very nice, un-rusty, solid, unmolested truck. Good find!

Ok, I like the look of that Spectre Off Road kit. Parting a kit together does look like it would be cheaper though.. hmm..

Bezel, I remember reading about this earlier from some other post. You guys are talking about the bezel around the speedo? Err..!?

Does that mean someone screwed it up, or what?!! Speaking of which, I'd like to get the speedo working, can I rebuild it or do I need to purchase one from a parts/junkyard? Dohh.. I neeed to reeeeddd morreee ;(

Oh and I just drained the radiator... It was brown muck...

Do you guys recommend a flushing product, or should I just flush with h20 and fill with 50/50?

the bezel is the part around your headlights/grill area. the thick side should be up. if your speedo isn't working, check the cable first.

for the radiator, try either a commercial product like erf, or a light acid, but be sure to rinse everything very well with clean water.

Ok ok...;)

The bezel thing: already annoys me. Thanks guys for letting me know. I'll keep doing some reading here.

Nice looking rig. They are a lot of fun. Make sure you take care of the safety things first, brakes, steering. Then go have some fun.

Nice truck, first thing I would do is axe the original steering system, go saginaw PS with hysteer.

Thanks guys

Yep, I plan on upgrading the steering for sure. Cross-over would be great, along with a power steering pump... Oh yeah!

I'd imagine the 42 year old tie rods and steering system does pose a saftey hazard. :D Also, I don't think it has been doing much than sitting in a garage for the last 4 years ...

Sounds like the timing is off a little on the engine as well. I've never done a timing adjustment, so I may do that.

Right now it has new battery, distributor, rotor, plugs, wires, starter and all electrical wiring.
I'd like to clean/rebuild the carb and swap out the fuel filter first before diving into other stuff.

I cannot find if this thing has a timing chain, gear or belt. How is it to adjust the timing on these engines?
