thats on slee offroad You probably can make one.

Gas cans on a roof rack are not really a good idea anyway. You want to keep heavy stuff like that down as low as you can. Putting them upo there and getting them down is a PITA too. If one ever leaks you'll have fuel running all over the rig.

I would prefer the cans on the roof than inside the vehicle. Get good quality cans and a nice mounting system and you can have a lot of success with cans on the roof rack. Cruiserdrew posted a link for Expedition Exchange. They have some nice quality stuff that won't leak and is very sturdy.

Personally if my choice is on the roof or in the rig... I'll put the gas cans in the rig. In or out, leaking can be addressed with a quality can. For my tastes, center of gravity and access still suck with cans on the roof. I've put them there and I won't say for sure that I never will again. But it will never be my preference.

Bumper mounted carrier is the best place.

Do not get the Blitz jerrycan. They leak like crazy! Very bad seal on the opening.

Anyone use these Wedco CARB compliant cans? Any leakage when stored on their side? Inquiring minds want to know. They can't be any worse than Blitz.

that screams LEAK to me. Jerry cans have a vent that will leak if layed flat.

Don't put any can inside if it has a vent or you will never get rid of the headache or the hospital bill after you passed out and crashed into a bus full of read headed orphans,

The NATO cans pictured do not have a vent when they are closed. They do not leak. The current US mil cans do not leak when filled/sealed properly either.

There are other cans which seal properly.

Old style blitz cans generally do not. :(

Brent,
I've had/used my Wedco metal can for 3yrs now with leak problems. This is the one I have; not sure if Wedco has different models in the metal version.

That's the non-compliant version. The CARB version has a plastic cap in place of the metal cap and that's what has me worried. Blitz does something similar. The noncompliant verison has a metal cap and the CARB version has a plastic cap that leaks horribly even when upright! Should probably just violate the Republic of Kalifornia laws and source Nato versions as some (who shall rename nameless to protect the not so innocent ;) ) have suggested.

I have the slee rack and had to mount it on a peice of plywood to mount it on my rack. The slee holder is specific to the African Outback racks. For the rest, this one would be a better choice:

except for price... the Slee one is 1/2 the cost! I was in the process of ordering the Ex. Exchange one when I discovered the Slee. Tried it on my rack with the s***z cans: the holder worked fine, cans sucked, especially the CARB one! I later obtained two NATOs (non-CARB): you can store them upside down. I'd be very wary of the CARB cans, as far as I've seen everything about them sucks, though my experience is only with the s***z can.

I've got this mount and it works great, secure and no rattle. Also have the CARB Wedco's and have driven thousands of miles with no leaks.

That's great feedback on the Wedco's Scott. Didn't see the mount on your roof tho. The Blitz, as you saw at Anza, leaks horribly! It's a POS and have been looking for a replacement!

they're not very good from what I hear. Not so much that they leak when stored, but they leak everywhere when you try to pour.

Which is quite ironic when you think about it, they're "designed" to reduce the escape of these volatile emissions! No such issues with the non-compliant NATO spouts, nary a drip!

I was going to state this as well. California makes me laugh alot. I have to laugh though to keep from going mad. :bounce2:

Does anyone have ideas on how to securly mount 5gallon jerry cans to a yakima loadwarrior.

Don't know where you're going that requires a 5 gallon can, but I've put the smaller 2 gallon ones in my Loadwarrior. They fit a lot better...

Blitz/s***z isn't much better until you get it flowing, then it's ok. Damned if you Blitz, damned if you Wedco from what it sounds like. You choose - spill while driving or spill while pouring. Great choice.

Suppose Wedco, since it doesn't leak while driving, along with the siphon pump Alvaro uses, might be a good combination. What do you think?
