Great photo. I'm no metallurgist, but I'd say that looks like work-hardening (embrittlement) leading to fracturing.

What kind of bearings did you use as replacements?

They were ACL's from a place in the UK called Milner Off Road (www.milneroffroad.com).

So it sounds like the best best might be the IDI 1HZ with a turbo from these guys: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=83942

Power & torque of the 1HDT without the hammering of direct injection?

That seems like a nice kit. The Ozzies have been turboing 1HZ's (like turbo'd 3B's) for years. Keep the boost moderate so the precups are not an issue, and the engine is happy for the long haul it seems.

Read through all those links above, and also continue your search. There are higher incidents of bearings gone bad in turbo'd HZ's, so I would not consider the assumption that it is "just" the DI impact characterisitics completely accurate.

This is one reason we change them on ALL 1HZ's (as well as the HD-T's and HD-FT's) we see. This lets us check/confirm condition, and in our opinion makes the engine more turbo friendly (read ready) for the customer.

So are we left with oil formulas, bad batches of bearings, or is everyone content for it to remain a mystery?

Still wondering why Ens hasn't had this problem with the 1HZ...
