J Springs, Couple questions.

So JonHeld very generously gave me his old J's springs, they are well used I know, but thought sure why not.


I'd like to "try" them. I currently have the 2.5" OME med springs with OME shocks w/ Slee blue CC. Do you see any harm in throwing the springs on and taking it for a spin? Obliviously not going wheeling or flexing, just 'round town to see how they ride, how the caster feels, etc.?

If they feel good I will go ahead and extend brake lines, shocks, etc.

2nd Question: They are in "rough" shape as far as rust'n'crust. Any harm in getting them media blasted?

Toss them on and see if you like them. Shocks determine droop travel, so no brake line, etc, mods will be needed until the shocks are changed.

with the blue Slee caster bushings you will have better caster than many others with J and OME caster bushings ..

Yep, My truck drives great right now with them. I figure it will change some, but better than nothing or the OME's. Currently Im at 1.7* and 2.0* L/R for correction. Low spot of spec, but :meh:.
 
IIRC, when you drop the axles far enough to install the springs it's necessary to disco the brake lines. That means bleeding the system to test and then 1 more time to install the brake line extensions. Why not just get the extensions and put them on when you try out the springs? Save you a bleeding session (pun intended).

I have never disconnected brake lines to install springs, have removed the mount bolt to allow for more slack. Agree that if for some reason you want to change lines, spring install is a good time to do it. I run stock, original to the rig lines, run L shocks and the rears are spaced for 1.5" additional droop. By simply relocating the hard line (frame side) mount down the stock lines work great.

Sounds like you've done more than 1 truck. I've only done my truck, about 7 or 8 years ago. I just pulled mine to get them out of the way 'cause I knew I was putting in extensions anyway.
 
I just put J's and L-shocks on mine two weeks ago. The front brake lines were pulled tight when I was pushing the axle down to get the springs in, but did not need to be removed. The rear line was no problem once the E-brake and brake line brackets were unbolted.

I followed the install guide on sleeoffroad.com for the most part.
