Issue with 2001 VW Passat 4cyl Turbo (1 Viewer)

Hopefully someone will be able to suggest a remedy. A friend of mine has a 2001 VW Passat and the problem is: doesn't matter if you blink to right or left, it's blinks for about 2 seconds and stops. Plus, the emergency flashers don't work either. I am not familiar with VWs at all. Waht do you think the problem might be????????
