I was wondering what you guys thought on this. Its a 92 but the radiator needs to be repaired and needs tires which both really don't seem to be that big of a deal. The inside looks pretty clean which is good. Would it be a good idea to get this thing?

Yep, a good solid 4wd is worth $3000. That said, is it worth it to you, what are your needs, uses? The "V6 4.0 Liter:hillbilly:" is a solid motor, but will leave you in the "seriously slow lane" for AZ mountain travel. IMHO, would spend a few more bucks for a later rig?

Good Quote from the description:

"...but when it drives it drives great"

Its all about what your plans are - this would be exactly the type of rig I would be looking for if I was going to plan on denting every piece of sheet metal, or cutting off the top and making a truggy, as the issues noted are small mechanically to fix..however, with the description being that honest, it could be a "tip of the iceberg" kinda situation if you were looking for a DD.

I was looking for something to use as a DD for a few years and then trail/weekend rig in the future, but i get what you guys are saying about when it runs and tip of the ice burg. Who knows what issues it will continue to have

Curious is the FJ80 really that slow on hills. I know my FJ62 doesn't compare to my 100 series on hills but I won't say it was seriously slow on hills. I keep up with traffic climbing up to Sunset point on Innnerstate 17. But I'm only running LT235X75X15R which is only one size larger than the stock P235X75X15R. So a liittle extra weight with 31X10.50X15s make it a dog. Interesting:hmm:. But your right even with the V6 upgrade a 93 plus is the way to go on a 80 series. I just love it when you can tell a seller really knows his vehicle:hillbilly:

Here is another well priced FJ80. http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/ctd/2400750674.html

For what they are asking for this ones I should be able to get 10K out of my 89. Only 5,500 miles per year. My rear bumper doesn't has have a hole cut to install the trailer light socket or the duct tape on the air intake just in front of the EFI. Just love the dealer who sells out of his house.

I got my 91 for $1000 running with an oil leak and 360,000 miles on it. Anyway, I would hold out for a 91-92 that's cheaper if I were you. You could find a 93+ for that price if you were patient.
However, depends on your needs, and I wasn't doing hills on my 3fe, but it did well with 35's, stock gearing and a high flow exhaust. I love how easy the 3fe is to work on. However, you do have to take a lot of parts off to get to that radiator.

My 3FE does well with 35's, too. It does bring the suck climbing up to Sunset Point though. No matter how fast I come out of Black Canyon City, I always lose all that momentum and can't get any better than 50-55 up the hill. Lots of times about 1/2 way up I'm in 2nd gear and almost 4k rpms to keep that speed. Other than those types of hills, if you learn to use the shifter and not afraid of running at 3200 rpms, 3rd gear helps a ton.

Funny story...Last year on our way to camp on Mingus, I was towing my small BT3-C trailer (loaded about 1,000lbs), when I hit the grade up the south side of the mountain I had to pull over and put it in low gear. I had just completed the pin 7 mod and with the switch backs, the grade and the lack of power in high gear, putting it in low really helped climb that hill. You learn to manage driving the 3FE and how to enjoy the scenery more.

Why the high prices? I just paid less than that for my 100 with the same miles.

Not fair you got a great (uncommon) deal on your 100 but I do agree the '97 80 is over priced. But people are willing to pay significantly more for the magic dial, white, and from Arizona then most other 80 elsewhere. If they wait chances are they get it or close to it.

Still a good price. With what guys are asking for the 97s and 96s lately on CL... Put in some lockers and some gears and you have a new engine. If I didn't have mine, that one would be tempting, but you're right. My church let me use their 15 passenger van for a month or two until I found and 80 I could afford with lockers.

Lockers are not a deal breaker with the right vehicle but the one above has 228K on the axles. I dont see anyone putting ARBs in without total rebuild. Just ARBs are ~$1900 plus full rebuild kits and labor now Im talking deal breaker. But thats just me.:hillbilly:
