So, If I put the transfer case in low gear, the center differential is locked also? sorry for not using the search, I guess is covered now 1M + times.

You have more than 1, 163 posts and you have not use the search for this question? Dang it, it has been covered more than a million times, you better SEARCH it:flipoff2:. By the way, you still owe some of these:beer:

Ok.. I got it.

Non-ABS 1993-1994 trucks also have the CDL button as standard equipment (USA Spec.)

All 3 of them? Are you sure?

If your 91 FJ80 is the same as US-spec 91 FJ80's the center is only locked when you press the CDL button. As I stated above, on a 91-92 the center diff is only locked when the center diff button is pressed....regardless of the position of the transfer case lever. On a 93+ it would automatically lock when placed in the 4L position.

This is NOT correct. On an FJ80 in it's stock form the CDL switch locks/unlocks the CD in high range only. It will auto lock when shifted to low.

If you remove a connector on the transfer case then you will have manual control over the CD with the CDL switch regardless of gear.

AKA the 7 pin mod.

It's a "Pin 7 Mod" on an FZJ80. The FJ80 doesn't have ABS and the transmission is not electronically controlled. Simply pulling the connector on top of the transfer is all that's needed.

From memory, my FJ80 did not lock the cdl when shifted to L but hey that was a long time ago...

Wow, so much confusion.

SEARCH, PEOPLE!!! IT'S BEEN COVERED!!!!

Yo Spike, perhaps Jose was too polite to mention it, but PRans are not exactly furrners either.... This ain't your day... :)

That's correct! We are so much part of the US (and proud of it) that we just had a quarter minted as part of the 50 states collection, this means the Land Cruisers we get here, must be U.S.A. specs. :bounce:

LOL, that just makes my second post righter. More righterous? In any case, Puerto Rico is definitely more a part of the USA then Kalifornia. :flipoff2:

In aus. I was told the early 80's cdl was vacuum operated and 94 ish they changed to electronic could this be true?. I know my brothers 97 80 come std with a cdl button and as said above if you select low range with out touching the button it does automatically go cdl

No. The FJ62 had vacuum switches to switch between 2WD and 4WD. AFAIK, no 80 Series has this. If the vehicle has a center diff this assumes full time 4WD. All CDLs were electronic.

my 94 does not have a cdl switch- the light comes on when i shift into low range-

That's because 93+ NA models came with a viscous coupler in the driveline, instead of a manual switch to lock the centre diff. The viscous coupler is kind of like a limited-slip differential, but for the transfer case instead of an axle.

can u explain what the push in switch does?

I have a 1994 no center diff lock swith. I'm planning to install it. can somebody help.? I already have the magic push in center diff lock switch. ( from another lc)
I have a couple of questions..WILL it work? is it just a matter of plugging it?
please help/:beer:

Yes. The wiring is in place for the center diff lock switch. Plug and play. When you locate the wiring behind the switch blank the plug will have foam wrapped around it, just remove and plug it in.

The Center Diff Lock switch will give you manual control over the locking of the standard center diff lock. Stock US spec 80-Series have an automatic center diff lock that engages when the transfer case is put into LOW range, and unlocked when the transfer case is put into HIGH range. The switch simply gives you manual control over this standard function.

I recommend doing the pin-7 mod in conjunction with the installation of the CDL switch.

I think a little clarification is need, lets see if this helps?

Driving along in in a straight line high gear you car is delivering drive to all four wheels.
When you go around corners the centre differential allows the front and rear propshafts to spin at different rates so preventing tyre scrub as you corner.

When you shift the transfer lever in LO the centre differential locks and the speeds of both propshafts remain synched. Now this can be a PITA if for example you are trying to move a caravan or trailer into position using the low range which helps with slow movements however, if you are trying to do this on a high traction surface your transmission will 'wind up' putting strain on all related components and makes maneuvering difficult.

The CDL switch allows you to engage the centre differential lock whilst in high gear and the pin 7 mod allows you to decide if you need the centre differential lock or not in LO.

Why Toyota rigged it this way is anyones guess, the Discovery CDL can be engaged in any range at any speed.

Hope that helps

regards

Dave
