Is this a solid state voltage regulator? (1 Viewer)

The Co that makes them still makes them, Wagner just reboxed ... I'm in correspondence with them now as they only sell wholesale to the Auto Electric business (not me). When I find out more, I'll let you know.

They have in stock both the W095-03 early type and the W095-04 72-74 type.

Maybe @Racer65 wants to stock ?

Wow, great job researching this. I just wonder why Wagner, who is in the business, does not stock them ?

Sounded like a money issue. Other than us, the stock just isn't moving. The guy I talked to said they purge things when the vehicles in service numbers drop to under one million on the road. Certainly less than one million old Cruisers left on US roads. Even this new supplier is probably going to stop at some point. They'll probably make something with the right circuitry, but we'll be left with generic regulators and making our own connectors.

Well, sounds reasonable , but , 1 million vehicles is quite a lot. During the production run of FJ40's , up until 1984, I can guess there could not have been over 1 or 2 million at most ? Now, how many have survived the roads, anyone's guess. If half of them are sporting 350 chevy engines, that lowers it again.
I know the production for these is offshore and I suppose they do not want to produce anything with low volume. Well , I suppose these will be sold to a lower volume producer and they will appear sometime.

Yeah, he could have been throwing out that one million number as an example of his idea of a really high number of vehicles. I'm sure that's more up to the number crunchers than the parts guy answering the phone.

Awesome job bloodhounding that @Spike Strip. I guess the only question left is if the Wagner/AMSCO regulator for $47 at Romaine Electric is better than the $19 Standard Motor Products VR470 at Rock Auto. It appears that the Standard is more widely available, so no hurry there. I'm going to call up and order one from Romaine as soon as Becky is back from lunch.

Thanks, everybody, for helping to update the 'MUD knowledge base.

I have one on my '74 already and you know that little needle oscillation you normally see in the ammeter ? Goes away with the SS reg. I bought one for my 68 build (if it's ever finished...)

Great job on doing this. Well done. One question left , if there are 9 left of the early SS regulators, are the still being made or are these the last of the breed ?

The place that sells them is a retail Auto Electric outlet.

The manuf didn't say they were going to discontinue the product, and I didn't ask, but neither did I get the impression they were.

Nevertheless - as with anything for vintage vehicles, get it while you can. My guess is after this posting, they won't last very long.

Snake Eyes. I just got off the phone with Becky at Romaine Electric. The do not have the TY-554/IN554 '72-'74 regulator. She said they last had new stock in 2013 and sold their last one in 2016. She put me on hold and called Transpo and they have discontinued that part, with no more stock available. She's going to call one last supplier they use (Regitar) tomorrow to see what they have and get back to me.

She did confirm what @Spike Strip posted, that they have nine of the TY-553 early regulators left, but I did get the impression that when those are gone, they're gone. She didn't call around to confirm that, but it would stand to reason.

No they are not disco'd ....there are 10 in warehouse. I already have 4 or so new ones...so I didnt need more.

Wow, Toyota was selling 27700-60080-84 for under 20 bucks last year. Now discontinued.

Ok, here is likely the most current info on these regulators:

TY-553/IN553/W095-03 - Early-'71
Currently nine left at Romaine Electric, with no more stock on the way. There might be a few at other suppliers, but I didn't talk much about these. $47.05, plus shipping. Call Becky at www.romaineelectric.com 800-426-5005.

TY-554/IN554/W095-04 - '72-'74

I talked to Becky at Romaine Electric yesterday afternoon. She called all her suppliers and there are seven of the TY-554/IN554 '72-'74 regulator coming from the last vendor that has any. She ordered all their remaining stock and there won't be any more after this. One is earmarked for me, so there are six still available. If you want a solid-state VR for these middle years, they probably won't last long. $47.05, plus shipping. Call Becky at www.romaineelectric.com 800-426-5005.

Standard Motor Products VR470 - '72-'74
Similar to the Transpo/Wagner/Amsco part. Quality unknown, but significantly cheaper at $20 online at multiple vendors (Rock Auto, Amazon, etc.). Talking to the folks at Standard, this part has not been points-style, fully mechanical for many years. Transistorized for a few years, then completely electronically controlled inside since early 2010s. Still looks like the old mechanical units on the underside, which confuses people looking for SS regulator, as the electronics are not sealed in epoxy on the bottom.

Toyota 27700-60080 (and 27700-60080-84) - '72-'74
Reports vary. Some of the online Toyota parts depots list this as discontinued, some don't. People in the know on 'MUD disagree a little, but there is still stock around with several 'MUD vendors still having them. $20-30, usually. I'm not going to link specific vendors, as I don't want to leave anybody out, but call your favorite and see what they have.

There is also some confusion about some of the aftermarket units (like the Wells VR839, which looks identical to the Standard VR470) that most of the online places say don't fit, but some list as fitting '71-'77. They will often cross-reference to the Toyota part number above, but I'm not going down that rabbit hole while there are current options that are seemingly better quality and more correct still available. Somebody will probably have to pick this task up again in a few years when all the good stuff is gone. Maybe there will be something better.

Glad they had them for you. I was waiting for her to call me back when they got them back in stock, but never heard from her. Hope they still have one for me.

I ordered one today. Probably should have got two, but lots of other things to spend Cruiser money on right now. Four left if anybody wants one.
