Is the drivetrain on an LJ70 strong enough to handle a lexus V8?

I'm looking to buy an LJ70 2.4 turbo diesel, with the intention of binning the motor and having a lexus V8 conersion done. Can anyone tell me if the stock drivetrain would be able to handle that sortof power?

the auto tranny in the LJ is the same as the one in the V8 lexus
the front diff is the same size but your weak link will be the rear diff...

in a nutshell...
no, it isn't

realisticly it will depend on your right foot but chances are if you are concidering a V8...being gentle is not the goal...

There is a few owners on Outerlimits who have done this swap. I agree with Wayne, the gearbox will last as long as you are nice to it

I have done this to my LJ70 and so far have not had any issues with the drive train. My gbox and t/case were a little noisy prior to the conversion however these have not got any worse

The gearbox & transfer should be OK, Marks adapters actually sell rebuilt R150 boxes to go with their V8 conversions into vehicles with weak boxes.

I've blown a rear diff, but there was a fair bit of loud pedal involved & it had done 200000km. I'm going to build up the old chunk with new gears & bearings & an ARB & see how it goes. If that doesn't hold up I might look at 80 series running gear.

Cheers

The 8" rear diff will hold up nicely to a healthy V8.

I have seen them tolerate built up 5.0L Fords, and healthy 5.7 SBCs with 35" tires and detroit lockers etc... (and driven by people who like to light 'em up once in a while).

The real question should be more along the lines of how you intend to drive the vehicle. Many cars and trucks on the road have smaller or, at least, similar sized rear ends to the Toyota 8" with powerful engines.

Wheel hop and other "user error" issues are the major sticking points to rear end breakage.

Do all LJ70's come with the 8" rear diffs? and would the manual able to to hold up to V8 as well as the Auto?

cheers

What ECU unit did you use on your conversion?

Conversion looks amazing! Didn't see any mention about what gearbox your using. Did you keep the stock one? I haven't come across any 2.4 TD LJ70's with an auto transmission. Just want to know if your running a manual box? and if so, how is it holding up?

rear axle

Well, the 4runner and gx470 both had a 4.7 v8 with an 8" rear diff and a 7.5 front. The 8" rear diff is a 4 pinion though. If you upgrade your rear diff a bit, I think you'll be ok depending on tire size and throttle.

Pretty sure it says somewhere in there, it's the std R151F manual box. No problems with it so far. JDM import LJ71's with auto boxes are everywhere here in NZ, you have to look to find a manual.

What's a gx470? if it's like an LX470 I thought they came with 10" rear diffs like the 80 series? - not that I've ever looked under one to check.
