Is my brand new OME rear shock blown?

If you take a look at the pic, you see the oil is only on the lower portion of the shock, looks like it came from under the top guard.

Also, notice that it is not road splatter as the rod in front of the shock has no oil on it.

What do you guys think?

Look at how the oil is on the lower mounting bolt. Looks kinda weird, just doesn't seem like the oil could drip down onto the verticle face like that. Still, it does appear to be a blown shock. Wow, you seem to be having some bad luck man, sorry.

Bilsteins are better shocks.

It appears to be a leaking shock. Flex the vehicle to get that side to drop as far as possible and look at the newly exposed upper portion of the body. My bet is there will be oil up there too. Time for a replacement in that case.

How old?

They have been on the truck for about 1 1/2 months. Basically, one weekend of very light wheeling.

I was under the impression that OME made quality stuff.

Very dissapointing.

Yeah, but Bilstein doesn't sell a shock specifically designed for the lift and travel of an OME 2.5" lift.

The faulty shock is a bummer though. Lame. I assume that ARB will replace them no problem?

It's blown - I had one do that a few years ago.

Even the very best manufacturers can have one slip by. I'm sure they will provide a replacement for you. Contact the selling dealer to arrange for a replacement.

I have one that looks just like that, Monroe junk!:flipoff2: Whe I get around to replacing them, Bilsteins will be going on.

ARB has excellent customer service and excellent products as a whole. if the vendor who sold you the item is a flake, contact ARB as a second option. They will mke it right almost certainly.

Yeah, I would have liked to consider other options as well, but--as near as I could figure out--nobody else (including Bilstein) offers shocks with the appropriate length and travel for the OME 2.5" lift (without modification).

Manufacturers should step up and offer something to compete directly with the OME stuff. I know folks around here would buy.

Too bad there are no factory shocks for longer travel. If someone in Japan (Mot, helloooo Mot...;) ) were to contact the shock vendor and ask them to make longer ones.........that would be cool.

Tokico makes the stockers....

Skillet,

You simply got a bad one. Three days after installing my OME's, I went wheelin' and hit a rock with my left rear shock. In fact, I hit it so hard that the bolts on the upper mounting plate broke. Amazingly, the shock was fine, albeit for a small dent. I am truly impressed by the durability of the shocks (and the vehicle).

I had Tokico on my '01 Taco. For stockers, that truck wheeled very well.
Come on Tokico...get with program...

Anyway, talked to my fine vendor, Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters and he was all over it. I should have a new shock within a week or so.

As I told him, if there is a bunk one in the bunch, it will, without a doubt, come to me.

Such is life. :D

Thanks to Kurt and thanks to all for the input.

I have always had good luck with Tokico shocks.

Kurt is a first class vendor!

I agree that someone should make a better shock for the 80. For the same price as the OME you can get Bilstein 5100s, mounts will need to be fabbed. I will probably stepup to 7100s, Phil's work very well.
