    Hey guys,

I just recently purchased a 1996 LC/LX450 and I will be getting delivery in two weeks. After doing research all morning long I finally came to the conclusion that the birfield maintenance MUST be done since she has 106K miles on her.

I just am not able to do that kind of work in my location too many mitigating circumstances. I am very reserved about asking my dealership because of the horror stories I have heard, let alone the $1500 dollar cost.

I wanted to post in the 80 series forum for any Northern Virginia people who would be willing to do the job for $300-$350 + parts (<-- I think parts are like 200-300). Since Im a newbie here I have no idea about forum rules about such requests, and I also didnt want to come across as elitest and rude, you know? I know LOTS of forums have a certain kind of understood etiquette thats not really published but always followed.

I also havent seen any other posts such as what I want to ask so thought I would throw out a feeler first.

    Thanks

    -Jimmy

I don't think it is rude at all. just throw out the question, and if someone wants to do it, they will respond. simple as that.

Join your local club and ask around.

I wonder if there would be a need to have an area that has "need work done" or something like that where people could post up work that need to be done and people would do it for pay.

Though I would never think to charge a person in our local club to help them fix something on there cruiser.

    Not at all!
I wished someone would pay me to do a birf job...we have done many as part of or wrenching parties on weekends. The club seems to make work a part of social events not to mention that newbies get to learn as you are elbow deep in grease!

Drive to MS & I'm in!

I'd do it if I were in your neighborhood, but unless you want to make a road trip to Iowa, it's out of the question.

You should try to get in on it as well, even if you just watch and ask questions. It will be a good learning experience.

Let me get mine done and I'll talk to a couple of fella's and maybe something could be arranged.

Parts run a little more than 300$ with grease and everything needed.

Oh and you were right this doesn't belong in 80's tech.

That is DEFINITELY my plan, I did the OME lift for my 4runner, shocks/springs on all 4 corners, and it went smoothly just needed sometime. BUT I wish I had watched somebody do it before because it took me almost 2 days and I worked on a friends recently and we got her done before lunch time starting at 7AM.

So I am a FIRM believer in experience after that.

I think you should do it yourself....just my honest opinion.

The first thing I did with my truck was the birf job...(as a caveat: the birf job was the first major thing I've done to any vehicle I've ever owned beyond changing oil!!!! ).

It took me two and half full days the first time around. Looking back on it, I think i can bring that down to about a day or so doing a good job cleaning and painting parts as well.

In any event, I'd be interested in helping ya--when's a good time? I'm free any weekend after Sept. 30th.

    later.

well, I have two construction jobs the next two weekends, and then I am off to the Mediterranean for four weeks. That puts me to the second week of Sept.

The third weekend of Sept. my girlfriend's brother is getting married and then the weekend after that my brother is getting married...that puts me to..."anytime after Sept. 30th."

I think it's fine and second Trollhole's "maintenance needed" idea.

But that's what local clubs are for. It's AMAZING what $7.00 a year can get ya.
