So ...I’m wondering if it is possible the p.o switched out a Birfield for one that is 15 mm to short ?what is the length of outer axle 1976 fj40 ?just finished the short side (no problems)or I would compare...lol.now I don’t recall removing c clip when I took apart.....classic me.And only have one c clip In my parts box.my spindle bushing was beat to hell as well as the inner c clip was out of groove.so something fishy .... I pulled axle with the bolt method no go...took apart checked everything looks good bearings seals set ,everything tight and good ,moved the grease around,and mating surfaces good ,no old gaskets and ...no difference.
