Is a water pump a PM item?

What do you guys think. On a 20 year old truck with 200,000. Never gets hot and does not leak a drop of coolant. I have done all the hoses and thermostat. The radiator was replaced a few years ago. Would you guys do a water pump just as PM?

At 200k I would. They don't seem to fail very often at all but if you have replaced everything other critical part of your cooling system then why not? I think you already decided what to do but just want to hear from others :flipoff2:

I would. I replaced my at about 180k when the radiator blew out. Figured if I was in there Id replace everything that's a PITA to get to while I had the radiator out.

FWIW, I just talked to the guy I gave my 180k water pump to the other day. He's put about 100k on it since I gave it to him. Haha.

No sense stranding yourself for a $100 item

Agree with these ^^

The pump is a PM replacement on the Toyota trucks with timing belts, like the 100 and some of the diesels from nearly the same era.

Since nobody else has said it "Much easier to change in your garage then on the side of the road."

It may run fine but the bearings could be shot. Mine at 155k had bad bearings. It was only a matter of time until the seal failed

A bad water pump In almost all cases Is a slow progressive failure. If you check things as often as most on mud, (fluid levels) It will give you plenty of warning and you can add small amounts of coolant until you can fix In a reasonable time. If a water pump causes a catastrophic failure there Is something far more Important thats let go. You will have time to fix it, however I have replaced things on my rig just because they dont look good. To each his own. Good Luck !

I was having the cracked radiator replaced this summer and had the water pump done as PM just because it was right there. It had 169k on it. Otherwise I wouldn't have even considered it. Not that it's a bad idea, I just would have waited longer.

The water pump in my truck had a bit over 200,000 miles on it when I replaced the T-stat. I noticed when turning it by hand (while still installed) there was no shaft play axially but there was a slight squeak squeak noise coming from the bearing, so replaced it. FWIW.

I would not replace a 1FZ water pump as PM. Only if I was going into that area to do other work--say a radiator replacement, cooling system overhaul.

That said, if I was going out into the back country this equation would change.

For living in ATL, I would not change it pre-emptively.

I agree about only doing it if it's a "while you're in there" opportunity with the radiator out, changing belts, etc. I did mine when I did my HG at 173K not long ago. The removed water pump was in good shape upon close inspection. FWIW, I replaced it with a RockAuto Aisin which was identical to the OEM pump with the exception of some grinding exactly where "TOYOTA" was cast on the original.

I agree with Beno, if you're not having any issues, the waterpumps for these motors are pretty bulletproof! But if you're having a cooling issue and pulling your hair out the waterpump is not something to overlook.

Really this is a flip a coin item, if you have the money do it, if you have other things to replace spend the money on that.

Asking that question here is like asking if the sky is blue. You know what the answer is going to be. ;)

The Aisin WPT023 pump is the exact same part as the OEM Toyota. When I bought mine, RockAuto had the best pricing: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=1872282&cc=1276703

Once you obtain the water pump, I'd suggest not actually installing it. Instead, put it on a shelf next to a lot of other expensive parts. Finish by admiring your shelf o' parts and post a picture of it on Mud.

Agree, work on bunch of 1FZ rigs, some in the 300k range, and have never seen a bad one. Have changed a couple for those who insisted, both showed no sign of failure.
