Just wondering what the general census is on this. I like having a tach, personally, but....

For most modern engines? It's kinda nice but far from necessary..

Your motor won't let it over rev ;)

Not necessary, but I have a tach on every vehicle I own....

Lol.... I'm kinda pissed about the costs of gauges. The cheapest I have found has been the VDO 6 Gauge kit for 315 @ summit for use in the trailcandy gauge panel. The cheapest autometer set is 415.

I am only going to run a water temp gauge, tranny temp gauge maybe, and oil pressure even thou I feel the oil pressure gauge is completely unnecessary for my engine.

Trailered rig I'd assume?

Any experience w / the VDO gauges??? I like the price and I like the no frills looks of them.

VDO makes nice stuff.

And honestly, exactly how accurate does it have to be?

No experience. I went from the sunpro s*** to autometer and was extremely pleased to have quality gauges.

they are good .. maybe not top but good enogh .. I like the most ISSPRO but don't think they have tachos ..

if you don't like the prices of most gauges, try autogauge, it's the low cost version of autometer and still works just fine

Exactly, in most case it's either "I'm Okay" or "Oh s***!" idiot lights would probably be okay for everything except engine temp. Maybe even better.

Many modern gauges are just idiot lights. Ford's oil pressure gauges only have two positions.

None of the gauges on my Tundra move hardly at all.

An idiot light is probably much more effective.

I use a Torque scan tool on the tundra to keep track of things when I haul. It gives me any gauge I could want in real time as a gauge, a meter or raw numbers.

Temp and trans temp are the most important gauges on my pig. I have a tach, but I took it off and haven't put it back on. I know what it should sound like.

Never hear much about anything other than autometer. VDO is something I recently saw at summit.
Like I said... The price is pretty good for E gauges.

Ill try em out.

Thanks for the input.

These days, with you kids and your fancy cars that shift themselves and ipods and rap music, a tach is just frosting on the cake. It really serves no practical purpose on an automatic rig, but with a stick, it can be a life-saver.
In The Mule, the tach's the only gauge I trust to tell me what's going on inside my engine, I have no working speedometer, so it tells me how fast I'm going in what gear, tells me when to shift, and will be the first clue if anything is seriously wrong (IE engine's working too hard at low speed, surging, stuck carb).

I dont like rap music!!!:hmm::p
This is an auto trans that the gauges will be going in. Wanna know what I use my tach for, at least in my tacoma....I use it to keep an eye on my fuel consumption and keeping my foot outta the pedal. Now, while this rig will not be a DD, it will be street driven to and from the trails. THAT is probably the BIGGEST reason I would have for wanting one. That, and because I have NO CLUE as to what kind of RPM's ill be seeing with this Vortec, 4L60E and 4.88 R/P gears. I suppose it'd be nice to know what the motor is turning running at 70MPH with the drive train configuration. Its about 100 bucks difference either way w or w/o a tach (depending no the gauge type). As it is right now, what I can see that Ill need are speedo, fuel, volt, H2O temp, oil pressure and trans temp.
These are gonna be the next purchase as I wanna get all the sensor installed BEFORE I put the tub back on for final paint.:bounce::bounce2:

Sounds like you've got your ducks in a row then. It's good to know what your engine is doing, I feel blind when I drive vehicles that only have a speedo and idiot lights!

Also, I agree, I hate rap too...
