Anybody have good luck with a vent clip phone holder? Thinking I could install using the heat/ac vent on the right side steering wheel.

Just sit tight a bit. I have a universal cell phone holder getting ready to come out next month for the 80 series. It will use a cell phone holder that I found on amazon that I really like attached to a 3D printed mount that will fit onto the 95-97 dash. The 91-94 dash cell mount will come out a few weeks later. I will get some pics of my design posted up in the next day or two.

Heck B, I was going to shoot you a quick email about this. I have your cup holder insert.
Does what you are talking about use the cup holder insert?

was at bass pro shops the other day -

saw a demo / model of this -

Steelie Car Mount Kit

Steelie Vent Mount Kit

looked decent -

The Steelie isn't bad, but I didn't like it very much for the following reasons:

1: The part on the phone is magnetic. Its cool if you want to stick your phone on other metallic surfaces, but it also means that other metal particles (in your pocket, ground, desk, etc) will also stick to your phone.

2: Over time, the phone magnet will get greasy and the rubber that provides friction will no longer be able to support your phone and it will always slouch downward.

I have really good luck with the ones with a metal backing plate and the dash mount as the magnet.

So here is a quick shot of one of my prototypes. The final version will be a bit different but you get the idea. I totally redesigned my dash insert product to be significantly stronger. It can now handle much heavier objects being mounted to it. I had to redesign how things attached and also added a new backing plate that snaps onto the back of large objects once they pass through the bezel. The phone mount will break before the bezel breaks.

Looks like you guys have a lot of faith in some 19-25 year old plastic AC vents. The AC vents on my 80 were shot without me hanging something off of them. Not sure hanging something off a part that is known to fail is the best idea.

That looks cool. $2.00! Never slips off?
Does not slip off.

the one i'm using really doesn't put any stress on the vent since it is so close to flush with the dash. I would get a picture of my phone mounted in it, but then I would have no way to take the picture. lol

I like it. Hmmm, so the insert I have won't work?

What insert are we talking about? I have shipped out so many phone related prototypes for test fitting over the last year that I have totally lost track of who has what. If you are referring to my old dash insert: I am working right now on an upgrade rear plate that will add the needed support to the old design. I will make one batch of them for the guys who want to upgrade the old design. I will eventually discontinue that and only sell the newer design with the built in upgrades.

Last few weeks been researching tablet mounting options. The difference is that I want something to hold an 8" tablet as well as be sturdy for long dirt roads and not vibrate to failure. So far the best I have found in regards to vibration is the RAM mount suction cup.

If I were to buy for an iPhone, I'd probably buy this one:
Amazon.com: Ram Mount Twist Lock Suction Cup Mount with Universal X-Grip Cell Phone Holder, Black: Car Electronics

For Tablet, I am either going to get the larger RAM mount (1.5 to 2" ball) assembly, something that mounts to the floor... Or now I might wait to buy the new mount that Bhicks is going to produce. That looks perfect.

Here's the one I use. The cruiser came with the mount when I bought it (possibly for a CB?) and i had the bike handlebar iPhone mount laying around. Its not very good for actually looking at the phone while driving but I actually prefer not to see the screen unless I'm stopped.

The problem for me and vent mount is that the car barely have 4 vents and in the summer I need every one of them. I tried cd mount and bounces too much with my iPhone 6 Plus and hard to see at that angle, plus my head unit doesn't have cd slot anymore.

Bhicks' solution looks really nice, only suggestion is make sure it is stout!

I'm in. Especially since I buggered up the little cubby slot retaining clips when I replaced my radio...

I did this too. Good thing the acceleration on these trucks are so slow it rarely comes flying out at me.
