On the technical side, I have several things going!

I'm collecting power steering parts to update the truck. I have a stock pump with rebuild kit sitting here ready, and a stock RHD steering box headed to Texas for a rebuild. I still need to pickup a crank pulley and have custom hoses made up.

I decided to replace the wheels on the truck with a set of SCS F5's. The Method wheels the truck had on it looked great, but required 2" wheel spacers to fit. I was able to snag some 16x8 -25 offset wheels from SCS. They also match my 4Runner nicely!

I just grabbed a Uhaul to pickup the next phase of this build a couple states away! Anyone care to guess what's next?

Nope, the 3F lives on for now, it runs too good to mess with.

Thanks, Matt!

That’s actually my “3F Toyota Fire Engine” decal photo you show (the slightly shrunken one). I’d love a couple fresh ones for the project.

My engine tuneup specs decal is still mint, so I won’t be messing with that one.

Here’s a little teaser of the next phase!

your them deleting the PTO run hot water stand alone pumping circuit as we chatted about during that time as well ?

the Crinkled 3F image is actually your cylinder head image you posted me in PM right ?

Mission successful!

This is just a dry fit because I couldn’t wait to see what it looks like. I can’t wait to get this dialed!

Ultimately it will be mounted about 2” lower, on a new alloy tray that’s 12” longer. That should leave a nice lip to mount the dual spares and a ladder.

Overall I’m planning to stretch the wheelbase 10” to accommodate the new tray, and carry the load better.

Overdue update!

I've racked up over 10k miles since picking this rig up almost 10 months ago.

The rear canopy never came off after my test fit. It just looks right, so I built around it for now. I had to re-do my fuel filler setup with a custom neck, hose and filler. It's working well, but not perfect. I plan to re-do that when I stretch the wheelbase.

I made it out for a day trip to the 5th annual Cruise Michigan event. It was good to put some faces to names!

1664203960110.png

A few weeks after that came my first (and only so far) failure on the truck. My clutch slave cylinder decided to pack it up while I was at work. The Fire truck got a ride home, and I was back on the road with a new Aisin slave a few days later.

Next up was my annual visit to the Silver Lake Sand Dunes with my old K5 buddies! The Fire Truck doesn't have the power or suspension to really rip up the sand, but it was still a great trip out!

Overdue update (continued)

I plan to drive this rig down to Kentucky for the "Overland The Red" event. I have confidence in it's ability to get there, but wanted to make some changes while I had a few weeks to pull them off.

First up is deleting the rest of the Fire Truck only cooling system. I removed the aux radiator and fire truck specific cooling hoses and replaced with FJ62 spec OEM parts.

1664205329248.png

While the radiator was drained, I took the opportunity to remove it and swap out my crankshaft pulley. The fire truck pulley is only setup to run an alternator and governor. I plan to add power steering soon and AC at some point, so I sourced an FJ62 spec pulley and nut. I didn't realize how much larger the fire truck parts were, so I expect this will change the way this engine feels!

Overdue update (continued)

Next up are some creature comfort updates.

I sourced some new sun visors from a 70-series. I used the 62-series bases with the new visors and they fit great.

I eventually plan to revamp the interior with an OEM floor and seat, but that's going to have to wait. I did want to flatten it out a little and sound deaden it before our trip to Kentucky. I stripped the interior and hacked out a chunk of the floor, and am replacing it with a flat sheet for now. I also plan to build a temporary floor to the under-seat area, and line it with sound deadening. I plan on applying a layer of Kill-Mat along with new jute and carpet.

As expected, the floor is clean with no rust!

1664206006678.png

I also stripped out the unused oil cooler and replaced with a 2F spec oil filter housing. The truck is equipped with an OEM Oil Temp gauge, so if I see it running hot I'll look into retrofitting a new cooler.

1664206237973.png

That's it for now! I plan to have the flooring sealed up sometime this week and back on the road!

-Rob

Back on the road!

I completed the flooring in the passenger area and sound deadened with KilMat. I also boxed in the area under the rear seat for electronics and storage. With the floor patched up, I installed a new carpet kit and Smittybilt center console. The overall effect was dramatic! The sound level in the truck is lower than my 06 4Runner, and it's going to be a great roadtripper!

I also dropped my tent mounting by ~1.5", installed an awning, and wired up my dual battery system into the canopy to run the fridge and charging cables for the tent.

In two days I head down to Kentucky to the Overland the Red event down at the Red River Gorge. We're excited to give the truck a proper shakedown!

-Rob

1,000 miles round trip went great, no hiccups!

Drove the truck down to Kentucky to attend the Overland the Red event and wheel the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway. We ran a number of Moderate trails and had a great time!

The Fire Truck did great, but really showed the limitations of my current suspension setup. There's just too much weight out back to keep the front end on the ground. I'd lift a wheel going over most obstacles.

Loaded down, the back end is sagging quite a bit.

Low bridge, luckily we cleared, the Ram 2500 on 40's in our group had to take a bypass.

Trail damage, I never liked that exhaust pipe anyways.

Happy Halloween!

1667400584031.png

No big progress on the truck recently, but lots of parts on order.

With the variable weight in the canopy I decided to run air bags in the back. I have a Boss airbag setup sourced from SLOCRUISER on the way to help with that.

I also picked up an 80-amp 3FE spec alternator mounting bracket set, and plan to upgrade the alternator soon. The combination of the (Non-US Spec, and hard to find) 3F 50-amp alternator and a REDARC 40-amp DC/DC charging my dual battery system leaves a lot to be desired. The internally regulated 3FE alternator also allows me to delete the stock 3F regulation components and clean up more underhood complexity.

I'm also moving forward with my planned power steering installation. I've sourced an OEM reseal kit for the pump, along with a new bearing and belt. I considered having the gearbox rebuilt before installing, but decided just to toss it in and see if it's in good shape. I figure I can always go back to the manual gearbox if needed. I picked up a Derale power steering cooler and will plumb the system with custom -6 AN hoses made locally. The RHD OEM hoses are hard to get my hands on, and I figure I can source local hoses if one fails while I'm on the road.

Man, this truck is so cool!

I was actually super close to buying this before you did. Glad to see it went to a good home! If you ever decide to sell, give me a holler :)
