Intro - My journey with an FJ60 just started (1 Viewer)

Hi all, just starting our journey together. She has a tad over 100k miles (177,000 km :p) on and just picked her up yesterday, so we are still getting to know each other. Looking forward to transform this ride with your help.

List of things planned:
- A few surface rust spots on the body and possible respray (white?)
- Mechanical review. Drove 250 miles yesterday : carb needs attention, power steering and clutch.
- Instrument cluster needs attention.
- New suspension all round. - TBC.
- New (steel) wheels and tire upgrade. - TBC.
- Trim update - Front grill emblem (sourced). Interior - Seat recovering, safety belts and center console.

Please feel free to suggest other items to check as we start the dance......

Check you fluids ...including the gear oil in your axles and transfer case and and transmission. when you go to tighten down the plug for the transfer case after you check the fluid make sure to carefully snug it...it's easy to overtighten this plug with the large wrench that is required. The housing is aluminum and the plug is steel ...so the threads in the aluminum housing can get stripped.

Continue to regularly monitor the oil and coolant levels....like each time you get ready to drive it. Do this for a while until your comfortable that the engine is not leaking or consuming either.

Keep and eye on your coolant and oil pressure as you drive. If either of these gauges is not working then you should get them fixed first.

Great that you have found a low mileage/km vehicle. With care you should get many times more miles/kms.

wheels really look out of place (probably 4 Runner). There are plenty of options for decent looking wheels.

Take a pic or two of the engine bay and post them up here, we can tell you what if anything has been modified (like de-smog) and sometimes point out problems like misrouted vacuum lines etc.

Check the "Resources" button at the top of the page, drill down and download Factory service manuals (FSM) to help you work on it.
 
Congratulations on your purchase. Looks like a nice truck to work with. This website will be your best source of information by far as you go through the truck. Take it one step at a time, start with the basics and get her safe (fluids, tune up, brakes and steering) have fun and don't hesitate to post questions here if you can't find an answer by searching.

Thank you guys, appreciate the feedback and guidance from those who have ore experience. Will add these to must do....urgently!

Agreed....these aftermarket wheels don't match the vehicle. Need to source some appropriate steel wheels. We just don't have all the aftermarket options outside the US.

I believe the 70 series wheels work.
 
Read the FAQ here first, so you see what probs are on the 60s. (70 and pickup have good info too)

Check your roof drain channels and windshield rubber for ANY rust or cracks before you even think about paint.

Find a good (older) mech in your area, and have him do the Oil Galley Plug Fixes right away, can save an engine.

If your PS pump is leaking, or even if not, put a sheet metal shield over your smog pump, will save you much agony.

Order silicone vac hose in 4 colors, and replace each seperate system with a diff color hose. makes it much easier to troubleshoot. Be very gentle with the vac attachment lines of plastic, they snap easy.

There are drain plugs on front of carb, flush that puppy before you do any adjustments.

@OSS has a great how-to on how to check the ground block behind the instrument cluster.

Vac out your heater box.

And welcome to the Machine....

edit: everytime you order from toy dealer, get a few extra screws/bolts. They are JIS, and local stores usually dont have. At least there are not to many varis.

At the top here in the header is RESOURCES it has all the maintenance manuals you should need
in PDF so you can download them and find what you need as far as service specs.
Two online parts sites that are closer to you Amayama.com and Megazip.net with warehouses in
Japan, Middle East and USA.
I‘m part of an online forum in SA. 4x4community.com might find help a level closer to home but its
not dedicated Toyota guys, but lots of info and knowledge.
