Hello, this is my first post on this forum and I have to say I am glad to have found this site. Looking forward to many hours spent here discovering all the ins'n'outs of Landcruisers.

My wife and I have decided to purchase an imported Land Cruiser to replace our old 4runner. We have been looking at the 80 series but have seen some impressive looking 70 series Prados. After reading through these forums extensively it seems as though the Prado engine is a weak link. The '93 Prados are beginning to roll into Canada from Japan with the 1KZ-TE 3.0 litre engine in them and I am curious if they are better than the older 2.4 litre engines. Anybody have any insight into this engine?

Ive known a few of the 1KZ T to have head problems at 200000 klms + ,but they are much more reliable than the 2.4.
Are you sure its a 1KZ TE and not a 1KZ T.I didnt think the 1KZ TE came along till 96
IMO you would be better off with an HDJ 80 in the long run if the fuel bill is not a problem.

I've never found the 2.4 to be unreliable, we had a eighty-something single cab hilux with the 2.4 which we sold to my uncle about 10 years ago and its still going strong.

Ill rephrase it. The 2.4 is fine without a turbo as it was intended

1KZ-TE 3.0 Diesel Engine in 70 Prado

In reply to the reliability of the 1KZ-TE 3.0 engine of the 70 Prado: That engine is smooth, strong and extremely reliable. This engine has also been used in thousands of Toyota Hi-Lux and Hi-Ace, and has a reputation of being extremely reliable. I have seen cars with 2,3 and even 400.000 km on the clock with this engine and it is much preferred over the 2.4 liter models.
This engine is still being used in a slightly modified version in the new Prado's.

I live in Mozambique, Africa and I have a 70 Prado with this engine, imported from Japan in 2005. Drives very well and gets me through some of the extremely rough roads here.

Cheers,

Salvatore
