Intermittent Idle Issue Spotted! = Resolved

Randomly the 93’ I pulled out of Tx has had intermittent idle problems. I have not driven it much since I got it. Driving it home the other night I drove it into my back yard for my two son’s entertainment. (New house no back yard yet, fresh dig out by a tractor, could not resist.) I proceeded to have monster idle issues and put on quite a show for my neighbor. (High revs + ditch + Rear locker + more revs = back on the driveway….Few!)

Pulled in to the shop tonight and took a look at the intake hose between the TB and the MAS. It looked fine, even passed pressing on it and looking for a crack in the billows. Did the old carb cleaner trick for vacuum leaks, nothing. Then I started to take it off to inspect closer. Yup DOA!

Good thing I have the rolled 94” standing by for tubification. Swapped out the hoses between the two. (Pic 2 shop floor) So I can still drive the 94” under its own power I did a quick fix to the damaged hose. That’s 4 mil packing wrap sealing it up. Doubt its good for anything more than moving the truck around the shop. This is fine since I will most likely get creative on the intake for the 80 rock buggy thing the 94 will morph into.

Mine did that last weekend when I was giving it a tune up, I epoxied it and so far so good.

Cannot imagine what it would cost new?

I have had some success inserting large diameter white PVC pipe inside the flexible air hose then using large worm drive clamps on the outside of the intake hose to keep the pvc in place. I have done this a few times and actually had one customer come back almost a year later to have it replaced. Most often I do this to get somebody by until the correct hose can be purchased.

Don't quote me but it was about $80.

Does anyone know if anyone makes a lube/dressing that you can treat the rubber stuff on the LC, would be nice to keep it flexable as time goes on. Same would be good for the door and window trim to keep them from drying out. Any suggestions, barring the obvious KY ETC.......I learned real quick not to leave it too open ended with my fellow wing nuts about:)

Silicone spray seems to work pretty well. I don't see why Armor-All wouldn't work, applying it would be a PITA.

The problem with the TB hose is not age so much as heat. There's a lot of heat generated under the hood, and it takes a toll on these parts. I don't think there's much you can do to avoid this.

But for the other rubber parts--like door trim--I like the Zymol stuff. Does a good job and isn't full of silicone.

Agreed. This truck also came out of a warm part of the country and I am finding most rubber parts shot. The driver’s side door glass rubber track cracked mid way up. No problem it looked like just one part of the three sided window track. EEEEEh. Nope it’s all one gasket; the one in the 93’ is just cracked in 2 places. Once again the rolled 94’ to the rescue! Munched drivers door but healthy window track. The rolled truck is a Oregon native so all the rubber parts are healthy from the mild weather. Now to address the leaky windshield gasket in the 93'.

If I did not have the spare part on hand $80 would be well worth it for the derivability! However I will add this part to my metal catalog of wreaking yard parts to keep an eye out for. I see another FZJ comming into the stable soon.

Miles per gallon up with this fix! (Makes since) Was pushing 12 MPG before, and now just got a hair over 15 MPG. That’s more like it. (152K on her too)
