Explanation: What type of cloud is that? It is not a naturally occurring one. Looking perhaps a bit like a gigantic owl monster, the cloud pictured above resulted from a series of flares released by an air force jet over the Atlantic Ocean in May. The jet that released the flares, a C-17 Globemaster III, is seen on the right. The flares release smoke and the resulting pattern is sometimes known as a smoke angel. The circular eyes of the above smoke angel are caused by air spiraling off the plane's wings and are known as wingtip vortices.

looks like one of two things: multiple flares dispersed from an airplane, followed by a pass-through (creating the circles from the wingtip vortex), maybe a fuel dump?

Those damn vortices can be nasty. When I was doing my first solo flight, I came in for the landing a little too soon after a much larger aircraft, a dash-8 IIRC, had just taken off. I caught a vortex he had left behind and my Cessna 172 rotated about 75° instantly, about 20 feet off the ground. The controller freaked out, yelling "go around! go around!" in to the radio. I righted myself and went around, no problems, with a quick and curt "on the go" into the radio. My instructor pilot didn't even see it - he had looked away for a second, then looked back when he heard the controller go batshit, and I was nice and level and climbing back out by the time he saw me again. It was a cool first solo flight. Might not have been... it was the controller's fault for clearing me to land too soon after the big plane took off - you're supposed to wait several minutes for the vortices to die out...

it's huge, that's for sure. Makes the C-17 look so small it doesn't appear to be in front of the cloud.

    That'd be cool to watch.

I get the impression that the C-17 in the photo is well behind. The photographer is in the plane that made the cloud...that's what it looks like to me...regardless of what the caption says...way cool for sure.
